Damen only smiles, and makes a warm bow to the lady Commandant, using all of his charm. But his eyes were open, keeping an eye for exits and for the mood of the place.
OOC: Not time for diplomacy yet, but Perception (14, Passive 20) to see other entrances/exits and Insight (23) to get a mood of the place (and her, if not too early).

"I would like to know more before. She can be a pawn of more powerful threat. And we better have proof of her acts before doing anything. She is liked and untouchable unless we have these needed proof." replies Jarel-karn to Beatrice.

Scarmiglione decides to keep the group's intentions under his hat, for the time being. "Good day to you, madam," he says smoothly, with a courtly bow. "I am Scarmiglione. I understand you wished to meet with us."

[sblock=Damen]There's an exit in the far right corner of the room, but there's no door like the way you came in. You guess it leads to a storeroom or closet or something. There are holes in the stone walls, like arrow slits, but they're too high up to be reached. They let light into the room. You don't think anyone could fit through them, except perhaps Scarm.

Vahl noticed you come in, but she was deliberately ignoring you, letting you make the first move. She might be trying to gauge your intentions.[/sblock]
Vahl turns to face the party. "Yes, I did. This is the first time renowned adventurers have stopped in my city. I am Aliya Vahl, the Commandant of Cay Harbor." She nods in response to Scarm's bow.

"I've been told that you just returned from the marshes. What did you discover out there?" Vahl doesn't seem to be one to make small talk.

The two men sitting at the table both rise. One looks to the party, and the other to the Commandant as if he's waiting for a cue from her.

"Our researches led us to a large, forbidding tree," replies Scarmiglione. "We thought it undoubtedly the source of the affliction. It was guarded by fearsome shadowy beings, which we managed to defeat. Unfortunately, it appears that although we were able to purge the tree, we have ultimately failed. Of the tribe of the lizard-woman who brought us here, we could find no trace. There appear to be no survivors." Scarmiglione looks down sadly. "But there is yet hope for the city, for the tree is no longer producing its maddening vapors."

Scarmiglione is acting as though he believes that (a) the lizardfolk are all dead and (b) that we have actually gotten rid of the source of the disease.[/sblock]

Vahl studies Scarm as he speaks. After he finishes, she sighs in apparent relief.

"You've done a great thing for Cay Harbor. With that cursed tree destroyed and the lizardfolk gone, the Guard may at last be able to secure the surrounding area of these savage lands. At the very least, we will face no more attacks from the barbarians. Perhaps that will be little comfort to those still in the quarantined areas, but I am confident that the rest of the city will thrive in spite of our losses. The citizens now understand the kind of toil and sacrifice that must be endured if the Imperium is to expand."

The Commandant meets the gaze of one of her subordinates. "There is a cargo ship returning to Daunton soon, is there not?" He nods in response. "Good, good. Show these heroes the way." Vahl looks back to the party. "With my deepest thanks."

[sblock=Insight 26]She's not lying exactly, but Vahl seems rather insincere.[/sblock]

Jarel-karn feels Vahl's men were ready to get into action, so Jarel-karn become vigilant and starts to look around. He pretend to be just waiting for Scarm to deal with Vahl but he is actually inspecting the room, his exits, his hidouts, the possible reinforcement that could come an by where. He also try to spot Vahl sword and try to see if he feels the same magical aura than the one on the tree.

[SBLOCK=OOC]Insight: (1d20+4=22) to identify the intention of Vahl.

Bluff: (1d20+7=20) to look like admiring the place.

Perception (1d20+15=27) to spot any person hiding.

Arcane (1d20+6=23) to identify Vahl sword.[/SBLOCK]

"You may have had the right idea in the first place," Scarmiglione murmurs very quietly to Beatrice. He has no doubt that the commandant is being insincere, but is not a sharp enough observer to hazard a guess as to why or how much.

[sblock=insight fail]Scarm has no chance of making the insight check but I rolled it anyway (might have been lucky charmable).
