Are you looking forward to Magic of Incarnum?

I have no interest in it. In fact, the only use I can think of for the underlying concept in my campaign would be in the hands of BBEGs.

Which is why I'm looking forward to it. I have been in the planning stages and initial set up for some epic level gaming that includes following up on the end of the Bastion of Broken Souls adventure, so it may well save me some work.

Since I'm not getting the chance to look at a Game Trade mag till Tuesday, just what did they cover in the preview? More Incarnum feats, or something else?

I'm interested to see how it turns out. I've never really liked the memorization/preparation approach to magic. The groups I end up in always seem to be very WotC-centric (and dislike Psionics) so I haven't really bothered looking at the non-WotC magic systems. Hopefully it will be well thought out and not have too many glaring errors.

Incarnum sounds like a combination of the Force from Star Wars and the Lifestream from Final Fantasy VII. As such, I will be definitely interested in seeing what this book has to offer. If it's a good enough system, I can easily see it replacing the regular magic system in my homebrew world. Heck, I might even use it in my current Eberron campaign to represent the lost ancient magic of the giants, although that largely depends on what Magic of Eberron has to say on the subject.

I'm disliking that more and more as time goes on myself. I tend to like classes that cast spontaneously, and I'm really liking the spells readied mechanic from Arcana Evolved.

I'm hoping it will be done in such a way that even those who dislike psionics might give it a try.

It also reminds me of Mysticism, from Dragonlance - namely the sphere of Spiritualism. Though that could be stretching the original intent some.

It doesnt really interest me. It isnt a new magic system...a new form of spellcasting or anything like that. It looks like it mostly consists of feats and stuff that let you add bonuses and improvements to things, and lets you make faux magic items for yourself from it.

It looks to me basically like WOTC is trying to present a WOTC-sanctioned means of having an alternative to characters having lots of magic items.

Much like with psionics, it doesnt really seem to fit very well with D&Ds existing cosmology/aproach to magic etc...it seems very tacked-on to me.

Well, this is something I have seen recently in the Wotc forum as well. The first reaction was a massive knee jerk, especially the soul using part. Although that feature might have been used in homebrew games. Like the voices of dissent there and here. I too, have many misforgivings on it.

For one, how would a soul will be considered to have a stronger essence from another.

Does it deal with taking from Elves also, they don't have that catergory of a soul. They are spirits wrapped in flesh.

I do understand in fairness, that the magic system is suppose to grow in earnest. But to me, it is still lacking in some areas. And my biggest pet peeve is the component using for spells. I do know also that there is a feat that negates that too...to some degree.

I know it is a lot a record keeping, but shucks...it would be interested to see, how many time a spell can be casted within a certain amount of time, before the components of it use, are exhausted. It will mean a better part of thinking more carefully in what can be used for what situation.

I guess the big pet peeve question is, how much components can be carried, used, before that specific supply is gone.

I surmise that some DMs do this, but this is not carried over in the Wotc thinking, if it was at some point. The first thing or last voice would have said, it will slow things down for the wizard, druid, cleric, ranger, and Paladin...can't recall right away if the sorcerer is affected as well. In doing their castings.

Honestly...as it was said before, it would make things interesting, on what can be casted, with what is on hand on in supply.

But these days, with new and newer feats coming out...components use, especially for the wizard, druid and cleric profession is slowly becoming...obsolete.

Which is a shame...I do say.

Like Psion, I like upgrades in magic...but like Buttercup and few others...I grow wary of more materials to absorb...more info to cram into the brain, more adjustment to a system, that is simply...still flawed.

Oi.

I dunno. DnD default cosmology seems like such an incredible hash of conflicting ideas to me that throwing something else into the mix cannot possibly hurt. So since I have no worries about Incarnum in that regard I'm curious to see what the book looks like. I'm not too chuffed about this month incredibly lame preview, but frankly any new system means new options, an I like options.

What I like about where d20/DnD is and is going is the incredible wealth of published systems that allow me to construct any world I want to portray in my game. If Incarnum gives me new options that way, and does it well, I'll buy it.

They might have been in earlier editions, but in 3e they're just as ensouled as everyone else. There's nothing stopping anyone from raising an elf anymore.

Even if I was still going to play, nope, not at all.

One of the big selling points for me about 3.0/3.5 is that magic and psionics and all that are represented by the same "temporary one time effect system." I think haveing a buch of other systems on top of that makes the game clunky.

Aaron.
