Halo was just a co-pilot before the Cylon attack, right? Does he lack the training for this kind of survival? He would have died long ago if the Cylons hadn't been helping him indirectly.
People tend
not to look up in general, but a human outline against the sky is something that we tend to notice subconciously. If the cylons were standing in a top floor window, or if there was a wall behind them on the roof that masked their silhouette there is a good chance that Helo would not notice the. But standing there highlighted against the sky is something that he would pick up on very quickly regardless of training.
You do bring up an interesting question though:
What exactly would SERE school be like for a colonial warrior?
But that's just me justifying things. I'm sure the real reason he didn't look up was because it in the script.
Well duh!
As things stand the series is done well enough that I can live with the minor annoyances, it's just fun to point them out.

I liked how Adama didn't pull a Picard on this one. Rather than go into the proceedings and make them all realize how foolish this all was, he just removed the inquisitor's authority just as easily as he gave it.
Olmos is definitely kicking mucho tail in the roll of Adama, there is a lot of his old Castillo character being channeled.
That is a very good thing.
Casting Mary McDonnell as the president was also a major coup on the part of the producers.

From the moment the woman asked for the authority to investigate wherever things led, I knew the term witch hunt would be used at least once in the episode.
Yeah that storyline was a no brainer, but it was a nice twist to see her have the cojones to actually go after Adama as well.
As a Marine I haven't been overly thrilled with the BG version being mooks (Hey look Starbuck just happens to be the crack sniper too! :\ ), but given the focus of the show (and the original) it is certainly understandable.
