Tolkien never said anything about beards. He just wrote that other races couldn't tell male dwarves from female dwarves. For all we know he could have meant that the females have moustaches or male'ish features or something. Heh. :p
Heh,

There's a parsing of words if I've ever read one. Tolkien's male dwarves had beards, "other races couldn't tell male dwarves from female dwarves," seems to pretty clearly point to bearded dwarven females, with mustacios too.

Correctly yours,
Gary

At first I denounced Terry Pratchett, but then I noticed that this was a Gygax topic. If Gary Gygax says that female dwarves have beards, then female dwarves have beards.
Thank you for such courtesy!

Ciao,
Gary

That of course is 3e heresy. I remember back when Dragon was still running PC Portraits, the art editor edited all the female dwarf portraits because the 3e designers decided that female dwarves were beardless. I decided at that point that all female dwarves in my campaign would henceforth have long, luxurious beards because I didn't like the idea of the editor taking it upon himself to edit the artist's work.
Fie upon those who are so purblind as to be unable to admit that all female dwarves have beards.

In outrage,
Gary

He's correct. and you don't want to go there. I only know what a merkin is because one of the guys in my group told me. I almost killed his character for it. :heh:

On a more serious note, The Fifth Elephant has some excellent material for anyone wanting to describe a dwarven culture. Here's one of my favorite examples, about the 'knockermen':

...

Quite so!

Developing that sort of material takes much creative effort and a good deal of time as well.

Cheers,
Gary

I wonder why it is that it is mostly males who find the idea of bearded females so disturbing?
;)

Alright, guys, I'll bet you'd be surprised to find out how many real-world women shave or use other methods of hair removal on places other than their legs. And I don't mean Brazilian bikini waxes. Women have testosterone too, especially after menopause. :p

You know, dwarves aren't the only one whose female have beards (and moustaches). Humans, especially of Portuguese descent, tend to have that trait, too. :p :D

Hey!!! I resemble that remark! ;)

Well...

While there are some males who seem perturbed by the concept of bearded female dwarves, the initial objection to the idea came from Jean Wells, who was at the time s module designer for TSR. When in jest I asserted that all dwarven females had luxuriant chin whiskers, Jean was so adamant to the contrary that she made a cause celebre of the matter.

Obviously, I find the debate most amusing

cheerfully yours,
Gary
