Class of Choice(s)? Not the Paladin

First Post
For those who like numbers...

Here are the total selectable powers per class. Note that this doesn't include class features (Divine Challenge, Channel Divinity, Cantrips, etc). This is only for the total number of options each class gets in power selection.

Cleric 79
Fighter 77
Paladin 67
Ranger 74
Rogue 71
Warlock 72
Warlord 70
Wizard 81

Poor little Paladin! As suspected, the Wizard came out on top. :area:

edit: Had the Paladin @ 69 by mistake.

That's what splatbooks are for. :)

If he has enough to cover all his bases, with a bit of choice at every level, then whether he has more or fewer powers than other classes won't be the deciding factor.

If the paladin only had one power, but that power was demonstrably better than all the other powers of other classes, then the fact that he had fewer wouldn't matter.

Well I wasn't making the argument that the Wizard is a "better" class than the Paladin because of having more choices. I was simply pointing out that those who like more options to choose from at each level should consider an alternative to the Paladin.

Besides, we all know that the best class is "Dungeon Master," followed shortly in this addition by "Monster." Those two classes have limitless options! :D

One of the reasons it looks like wizards+clerics have the most choices is because they need to pay highly to have effective "intelligence vs." and "wisdom vs." powers and those stats arent used to-hit by any other classes.

A lot of people complain about pally MAD, but I think you can make a really good d-born paladin with 18,18,12,12,10,8. the multiclassing options are wide open: they can use "strength vs." powers from several classes, as well as the "charisma vs." powers from warlocks.

The Paladin has less power selections, but he also has the benefit of having two very different, viable builds; a Paladin can easily go all Cha and dump STR. The Wizard, on the other hand, is always maxing Int.

That makes it worse though... the Ranger has one of the most varied builds available, between TWF and using a bow, but even it gets most of its powers shared between the two builds. On average, it seems that you have only one power that is entirely limited to one build or the other, giving you 3 choices at just about every level of powers. The Paladin's restrictive builds not only have the lowest total amount of powers, but occasionally you're left with only one choice that works with your build. The Strength based Paladin, for instance, only has one option for a Daily power at level 1.

STR-based Paladins are low on choices, but most of their powers are quite solid. En par with the Fighters at most levels, and at certain levels blowing them away (*cough* 27 *cough* Stunning Smite *cough*).

I'm not exactly crying for them.
