What you need to do is make the penalties for having taken WP damage more severe. Like being reduced to partial actions, a la 0 hit points.
Going back to hp and -ves enforced the idea that someone was down and hurt/dying. The simple wp/vp system I used didn't have that
-1 to -9 WP is dying, just like -1 to -9 hit points.
