Dragonscale armor

Does anyone else find the dragonscale armor listed in the Quintessential Fighter supplement a bit overpowered? Would you let such a powerful suit of armor receive additional enhancements from someone with the Craft Arms & Armor feat?

It provides a +10 AC bonus; maximum DEX bonus of +3; a check penalty of -4; spell failure chance of 30%; speed of 20' for medium sized creatures; and weighs 30 pounds; cost is 4,500 gp. Additionally, it provides DR 10 against all attacks related to the breath weapon used by the dragon from which the armor was made.

The concept here is that dragonscale armor is made with the smaller scales of the dragon, and thus is rarer than standard dragonhide armor...and therefore provides additional benefits and a higher AC bonus. Seems overpowered to me, but I wanted other people's opinions.

i say you kill the dragon bravo. if you eat its heart that might count as a manual of stat increase. dragons are HARDCORE. dragons ROCK.

(edit: i have never killed a dragon in PnP)

Our group did lose one PC during the encounter, and two others were taken out of commission by the dragon's breath and bite attacks. My character and one other were the only two left standing, and we were both working at 20% or fewer HPs .

Fortunately (although almost unfortunately for our party) we managed to block all but one of the wyrm's escape routes, and she had to go through us to use that exit. She darn near made it, but we struck the killing blows/spells in the nick of time!!

Are the size limitations the same as for dragon hide armor?

You should be able to add enhancements or special qualities to the armor. It should probably cost more, though.

Custom Dragonhide Rules

I have a set of dragonhide rules that I use in my games. They might suit ya' fancy. :)

If you don't like the idea of Elemental Damage Reduction, you can always substitute it for Elemental Resistance and modify the prices accordingly.

I can't attach it for some reason, so give me an email and I'll send it on to anyone that wants to take a look. Let me know if you have any questions.

At that price it is way overpowered.

Mithril fullplace is +8 Armor bonus, Max Dex bonus of +3, check penalty of -4, Speed of 30, 25% spell failure, weighs 25 pounds. Cost is 10,500 gp.

The only benefit the mithri full plate has over the dragonscale is that the spell failure if 5% less and counts as a medium armor (10' higher speed).

The dragonscale is effectively +2 Mithril Full Plate with Energy Resistance (total of +5 in enhancements), which would have a base price of 35,500 gp.

Since the dragonscale could still gain another +10 in enhancements beyond that, I would probably value it at around 45,000 gp (at least).

4,500 gp is ridiculously low (in my opinion). Maybe it's a typo and they left out a zero?

My email is listed at the bottom of all my posts, although it's my office address which I usually only check during the business week. I'll be happy to review your dragonhide rules tomorrow.
BTW, it's not so much the DR bonus which bothers me, but the +10 to AC along with the relatively low check penalty and high maximum DEX.

Dr. Zoom:
IIRC only one suit of dragonscale armor can be made from the specifically selected smaller scales, and the dragon must be at least two size classes larger and perhaps three for this to be possible. If you factor in its inherent bonuses, I'd also rule that the costs for enhancing it more would be significantly higher than normal.

Actually, my comment regarding Elemental DR was about my version of dragonhide. :)
