I think he'll be killed, personally. I'm sort of expecting Malik to mortally wound Soong, but not kill him outright; I'm expecting Soong to say something repentant before he dies.

OK, I missed last week (the first of the story arc). What piece am I missing that the death of Soong is even really possible?
1 - he already created Data (although TNG makes it sound like he and his radical android ideas had quietly vanished, and I presumed he died from the crystalline entity.
2 - he's not THAT Soong (the preview and discussion led me to believe he was, but perhaps THAT one is a descendant of his.)

What I'm expecting is that at the climax of the episode, with high tension and angst, Soong realizes the "lesser of two evils" is removing Malik (and the rest?) before they can destroy bazillions of people. The fact that he didn't already realize this when Malik refused to release the antigens astounds me.

I really hated seeing Smike (?) die; maybe it's just the underdog in me, but I was hoping he would be the key to his "better brother's" undoing. But since he did go, I'm really disappointed that he didn't completely vaporize (like Chekov's first captain in Star Trek II or at least one person on that episode where Data was "collected" - all IIRC).

I belive that this is the more likely case.
IIRC, there was something on one of the ST sites about this Soong being the grandfather of the one that created Data.

He didn´t die from the crystalline entity, but through Lore´s hands (Data´s evil brother) when he finished creating the emotion chip and wanted to give it Data.

This Soong probably isn´t the same Soong as the one that created Data (and Lore), more probably just an ancestor...

This Soong is Arik Soong. The guy that created Data is Noonian Soong (name sounds awfully similar to Khan Noonian Singh, eh?).

I'd say that Arik is, indeed, an ancestor of Noonian.

I think we can take it as fact.

well, then he'll have to survive at least long enough to sire an offspring... unless he did so already in his younger days....
Maybe he gets together with one of the lady augments....

Unless they twist it to become an unnatural siring. Perhaps Noonian is the second generation of a gentically enahnced clone that will survive the next episode.

Ah, I knew Data's "dad" was Noonian. I evidently blocked out any reference to a first name on this one, since I "knew" it was Noonian. Missed that darn spot/listen check, I guess!
