The director of this ep also did a very good job. I think that is overlooked with TV shows in general. With so many shows being shot in widescreen it is becoming more and more important to have someone who can pull off the writer's story and make it feel cinematic rather than just tell the story.

Yeah -- Geordi LaForge rocks!!!

I must admit, I found this episode to be a vast improvement... this show tied into the rest of the ST universe more than most of the others.
I missed the last episode... what happened to Trip and T'Pol? I take it they broke up for some reason....
The Orions look familiar... did they appear in the original series?

they had an Orion slave-woman ... who seduced (guess ... guess ... Kirk), anyway whe was green.

I don't recall if the orion males were ever shown.

Coto seems to channelling Trek lore and themes along with acknowledging classic characters. I'm pleasantly surprised.
That's one of the things about DS9 I liked a lot. It was the one spin-off that over its run paid the most attention to the classic Trek roots. TNG did to some extent, but often ignored the original. That was even more true of Voyager. I'm glad Coto's putting in the references and nods to classic Trek, not just with this storyline, but the upcoming Vulcan storyline as well.

Oh yeah, you don't get more classic Trek than Orion slave girls; they go all the way back to "The Cage". That's why they showed one here, even if the scene was utterly gratuitous. The term Orion Syndicate I'm pretty sure was introduced in DS9; in the 24th century, they're still part of the shady Trek underworld. Though they didn't actually appear in any episodes, they were mention a number of time in dialogue.

Agreed. DS9 was my favorite Trek series of them all, including the Original Series. Although the motion pictures (original cast ONLY) are the best Trek out there, IMHO. DS9 really felt like Trek, even though TNG did well to pay attention to it's past. The overall writing and plotlines were the richest in DS9. Especially the last 3-4 seasons. The universe simply felt LARGE and unexplored. I can't really explain it better than that.

I couldn't stand Voyager, so I won't comment as my hate has little relevance to this topic. :)

The Orion stuff is something that should have been used a looong time ago. They did well by the Andorians but still have a wealth of aliens/circumstances left to explore and expand upon.

Romulan Wars, anyone? How about the Founding of the Federation? Founding of the Neutral Zone? These are things many Trek fans want to see and see done well.

The Romulan Wars should probably be a trilogy of feature films but I'll take it being covered on TV. And while I love time travel stuff, I hope Enterprise stays away from it for a while so if they do decide to use it later it won't feel use so over-used.
