Male, 14 years old. and really thinks this is a bad idea, for the same reason that I formed my opinion of the BOVD: The hobby does NOT need crap like this to add to its reputation. Do you really think you need a books shouting SEX!!!!!!!!! and SADOMASOCHIST!!!!!! next to the DnD core books? It attracts people to the hobby that I'd rather not associate with, and drives away some people who I think would have made great RPers.

There are a lot of people attracted to the hobby that I've never gamed with nor am likely to game with. If someone's going to be driven away, reassure them that you don't use sexual material in your game. Really, is it any worse than have sexually explicit material in the game and not telling a potential gamer about it until he/she sits down at the table?

Darn... sounds like exactly the kind of reactionaries I couldn't care less about ever sitting down at my table. Just makes room for someone else to sit down and play.

Frankly, if someone's going to make a snap decision about roleplaying, they've already likely made it, or else they'll make it on terms much less logical than you're ascribing to them. Anybody who's likely to believe we're a bunch of demon-worshiping sex fanatics almost certainly already does, and the existence or nonexistence of such books will do nothing to sway their opinions.

If such people would choose to judge me based not upon my actions but upon their own faulty perceptions, then I can quite happily live without them in my life, and I shed no tears over their loss.

Hmm... as much outcry as there is on the boards about this book, it's interesting that almost 73% of voters "approve" of the book... I agree with kenjib, that it's partially due to the ambiguous nature of the poll, but I do think that this is being blown out of proportion. It's only the latest "d20 drama" to hit the streets...

I personally don't really care one way or the other, but I really really really didn't want to know so much about the authors/company members personal lives (did they really have to put all that info in the press release?).

Yeah, put me in this camp. Firmly. Although I suspect this (the press release) was a bit of a joke. I dunno, a certain degree of deviance is fine. Just keep it to yourself, please. Your thing is your thing, and it's not my thing, and it's just as not cool to shove it in my face as it is not cool for me to try and tell you it's wrong and you should not do it.

edit: interesting, you don't have any options for minors who don't want to start dating...

Nor for minors who are already dating. It isn't unusual for the age of consent to be lower than the age of majority, and we must keep in mind the existence of kids who are sexually active before the legal age of consent (I was), no matter how much we disapprove.

For statistical purposes, I am one of those people who doesn't think the initiative is deserving either of praise or of condemnation. Male, 38, never married.

You mean just like the snap decision you just made about them...?

Very sad :(

Those disapproving of the book are a vocal minority. A fairly common phenomenon in these kind of things.

If we define "approve" as "I don't care one way or the other, and have no plan to buy or use erotic material in my games," then that's me, married with no kids. :)

The poll and pretty much the entire brouhaha over Book of Erotic Fantasy is being divided along Approve/Disapprove lines. I'm in the camp that doesn't strongly Approve or Disapprove one way or the other, even though I recognize both parties stances on the topic.

Except that in a better (though still not really well) phrased post, 60% have no use for this suplement at all. Not exactly a majority approval either, hm?

Once you're in a reactionary environment where "disapproval" is equated with censorship (ie, most of the internet), this sort of poll becomes meaningless. A good poll would be multiple answer and give a variety of reactions you may be having to this publication including apathy, annoyance, anticipation, disgust, etc.
