D&D 5E Extra Attack +1 feat

Make it require level 11 and consume the use of your Bonus Action in order to make use of it. Slightly better than two weapon fighting, but not massively so, seems no more valuable than some of the strong feats out there. And suddenly most spellcasters are a lot less interested and many other characters are disinclined to pursue it. Could be nice for Champion Fighters though, who may not have anything to use for their Bonus Action, and who get more benefit from making lots of attacks.

Edit: Heck, just add to the above that it requires you have already gotten the Extra Attack feature from some other source. That means you'd need 5-6 levels in one of various classes just to qualify. It's certainly strong, but that level of investment guarantees most people won't take it, and it would be competing with options like Polearm Master. This would also shut down concerns about stuff like Rogues getting ridiculous sneak attack opportunities (since Bonus Actions are actually precious to Rogues and investing 5-6 levels in some other class is rough).

This is just a stray thought I had that will have no follow through on it but how powerful would you consider a one-time feat that just gave you an additional extra attack? How often would you consider taking said feat for a character if it existed?
One time feat? They should stack!

Make a fighter.
  • L4: extra attack feat (2 attacks)
  • L5: extra attack (3 attacks)
  • L6: extra attack feat (4 attacks)
  • L8: extra attack feat (5 attacks)
  • L11: extra attack (6 attacks)
  • L12: extra attack feat (7 attacks)
  • L14: extra attack feat (8 attacks)
  • L16: extra attack feat (9 attacks)
  • L19: extra attack feat (10 attacks)
  • L20: extra attack (11 attacks)
Then you do action surge.

God damn, no, compare that to other existing feats. None of them even come close to "have an extra attack every round".

I'm sure there is a way you could balance it by gating it behind level requirements, limiting its use, etc, but straight up "get an extra attack every round" would be a hard no in my game.

This sort of reminds me of the old 3/2 attacks of 1E/2E specialization. I think if you have it cost a bonus action, it should work out. Maybe needing 4th+ level, maybe needing Martial Weapon proficiency.

An extra attack?

Each attack MULTIPLIES damage. It is extremely powerful. Indeed, this feature pretty much is what a Fighter is.

Maybe as an Epic tier Boon?

So Dual-Wielding is obviously the most powerful fighting style </sarcasm>

More seriously: the game already offers ways of getting additional attacks. Gate this with the same restrictions, and I cannot see how it is THAT powerful. Spending a whole feat to be able to make one additional attack without being restricted to dual-wielding light weapons, while still burning through one's Bonus Action, cannot be THAT bad.

Is there a character optimizer who wouldnt take a feat that grants an additional attack?

That would be the strongest feat in the game and I would take it on every remotely martial character.

Of course personally I think characters, or at least martial characters, should start with two attacks per round (and monster meat should be adjusted up accordingly) or get it at level 2 or 3, because the game is just much more satisfying when your character usually accomplishes something on their turn. This would also dampen the impact of getting all feats giving some form of additional attack at level 1 and the impact of getting another attack upon hitting level 5, which tends to be the point demanding the most radical changes in encounter design. It's not like making a second attack is particularly complicated for players new to a character to master, and in 5e they gave 2 attacks to a lot of random low level humanoids so it is consistant with the world around the characters.

But a tedious slog to the second attack seems to be a cherished D&D tradition so I imagine we're stuck with it.

No. This steals a class feature.

Using the new feat level limits from the playtest, and requiring at least level 6 (which would really be level 8 since thats the next feat level currently), I think this wouldn't be too bad as long as it worked like the level 5 extra attack, that is, if it didn't allow more than 2 attacks total with the attack action.
