Uhm, why do you say this? Is 2d8 Str per strand that grapples you not dangerous?

You get a save right? I am going by my experience in game as a PC in RttToEE and CotSQ. Both times, I was allowed F saves that were a joke (by comparison to the DCs of the spells from the Doomdreamers anyways). I might be a bit jaded though: every one of the 4 characters routinely have F/W saves in the mid teens.

Yes, you get a save. It's DC 18. How many mages do you know that are going to make that? Rogues? With a poor fortitude save at level 12, you're looking at +4, add in Con and a Cloak of Resistance, and you might put it up at +8 or +9. You're failing almost as much as succeeding and since they can do it 6 times, you're bound to fail at some point. And since mages don't have high Str, they're going to be near helpless after a single failed save.

It's a nice form, particularly for polymorph. The +14 natural AC alone almost makes it worth it, let alone the Str damage.

So back to me original point, what's yer second skin preference and is there anything better out there, in your opinion, than a Fire Giant?
It depends somewhat on which polymorph rules you use, but the best MM combat form is usually the stone giant (for the AC). In the MM3 you have the cave troll (for the natural attacks) and the war troll (for all-round munchkiness).

I play it that when you change into the roper its save DC gets recalculated according to YOUR HD and stat bonus.

But beware. If you start abusing your polymorphing so will the DM. One of the nastiest things a DM can throw at you at 17th level is a couple of high level Druids casting Shapechange on top of their wildshaping abilities. Not to mention all their animal buddies, tree buddies, shambling mound buddies, elemental buddies, etc... A druid with a good diplomacy skill/animal empathy skill can have a lot of allies living in his/her immediate vicinity.

So if a couple of high level Druids come after you, prepared and with allies and summoned creatures, your dead.

Umber Hulk!

For those times when you need to get the heck out of dodge... go down.

For breaking into secure places... tunnel, baby.

For establishing secure places to sleep at night... large cavern coming right up.

For when you're jealous of another mage's tower... collapse the foundations!

:D

Your weapon doesn't resize when you polymorph so if you don't have a spare large weapon to hand you would be at penalties to hit and the weapon damage doesn't go up. Sometimes being a creature with good natural attacks is better which is why treant is so good (and the fact it only has 7HD

At 17th level you could get access to polymorph any object I assume, so this opens up outsider forms (unless of course you were already a native or full outsider). Planetar has great stats and gets +19 NA, Kelvezu demon gets great stats +15 NA and +8d6 sneak attack

Then of course there is shapechange

So the 2d6 drops to 2d4 and I lose say 2-4pts to hit, no big deal.

I haven't got MM3, cr@p I haven't even got MM2. I'll see if I can get the stats from somewhere/one.

Basically for the most part I'd want to stick to a form that can spellcast since I've access to 5th level clerical casting.

WRONG, one of the nastiest things a DM can throw at you is something created by BlackDirge........been there, done that!

Yeah, yeah, yeah, whatever.

Nah, Druids don't scare me. Just teleport away from them. Now, 17th level wizards, that's a different story.
