I don't think Heroquest - the board game - is a good game. It's random and kind of stupid. It almost feels like it has more in common with Snakes & Ladders than D&D, say. I get that it's "for kids", but I feel like it's pretty off-putting. I'm not convinced kids will enjoy it, but hey anything is better than Monopoly I guess!
I did the Hasbro Pulse a few years ago and when my nephews get old enough we will find out. My brother and I played the ever loving crap out of it as teens and loved it. 🤷‍♂️

My friend got the updated one recently while and we enjoyed it as kids, like 9-12, I was just not enjoying it, even though my character was pretty OP compared to the rest (the Elf).

Yeah, I probably would rather just run an RPG today with my friends. Though, if I was trying to help provide stepping stones for my nieces and nephews, then Heroquest is always an option I'll consider. As teens we were just finding out how to play games like this and found it more accessible than D&D. We didnt power game it by being any particular character with any artifact becasue we didnt know how to do that yet.

It's been more than thirty years since I've played HeroQuest, so I am left more with an impression of the game than I am with solid knowledge of how it plays. But I feel similarly about other games from the 1980s and early 1990s I used to enjoy so much in my youth.

Starfleet Battles is a pretty good game. Despite being a fairly complicated game, we had very few problems with interpreting the rules which is quite a compliment for a game of that era. Do the rules say you can do this specific thing during a phase? Then you can't do it. It's been twenty-five years since I gave up trying to find people in my area that played it. I don't know if I'd even give it a try today given it's a time sink.

I've come to like D&D for what it is. The gateway game for casual play. I really think its recent explosion in success has translated into more gamers exploring other RPGs. Its not the problem for me that it seems to be for others.

Basically. Having played with both people who will play pretty much anything someone is willing to run and people who will only play official D&D, the thing both have in common is everyone I know started off playing some version of official D&D. As much as I'd like to think that players would branch out to try other games if WotC vanished tomorrow and official D&D wasn't a thing, I think it's more likely they'd just leave the hobby entirely before they'd pick up some other game.
