I present.... Thorn Elemental!

Man, maybe I should move my thread over from the Homebrews to the House Rules. HR certainly gets more views and apparently, more responses.

Anyway, looks neat. Heh. Guess I don't have much more to say than that. :)

What do you mean, Dog Moon? I'm not aware of any homebrew forums on EN World..... I know there are a handful of Hosted Forums/Settings, like The 13 Kingdoms that I'm a part of, but certainly the Hosted Forums get a lot less traffic because they're less noticeable (really have to dig through the Hosted Forums section actively to find anything out about that stuff, whereas the House Rules forum is near the top and has an immediate list of threads displayed when clicking on it......).

Not...aware... :( Wonder how many other people are unaware.

Although I guess it might not necessarily be easy to find. It's in the Subforum of the House Rules called Creature Catalogue and then in the subsubforum called Homebrews.

Homebrews

Ok so I see nothing wrong and have nothing to contribute, looks good. However that isn't my reason for randomly jumping into the thred for my (what 5th whole post on enwordl? :-p ) I just had to ask. Is the Thorn Elemental inspired by Magic the Gatherings Thorn Elemental? I only ask because of the Gerard reference :). One of my all time favorite cards by the way!

(apparantly it was post 12!)

Looks good, and I can just imagine this thing thrashing through some overgrown forest. Some of it seems quite like my old 'coin elemental'; animated by a Ravid and based partly on a wind elemental. I gave the PCs an easy option to drop it down a hole, but as I knew they would they took the risk to fight it and not lose all the gold. :D

Oh and...

Yup, I've never seen it.

I have the main forum page bookmarked, but I recently noticed that I (not sure how) sometimes get to a page that includes more forums. I've been useing (though only occasionaly) the forum for about a year and never knew those boards existed before. I always use my bookmark...so I guess thats why. :\

Be welcome

Not really, butnow that you mention, it must have been at a subconscious level :uhoh:

Gerard? I just picked a name off the hat :uhoh:

thanks nontheless, :D

Wow! That is one tough shrub.

Notes:

1/ I'd change the name of Woodland Stride to something like Enhanced Woodland Stride to make people notice that it applies to magically manipulated plant-stuff, too.

2/ What's with the SR? Plant Traits and Regeneration already hurts spellcasters. (Especially Plant Traits.)

3/ What's the range on the Needles? Most grapple-happy plant-critters are balanced out by a total lack of ranged attacks.

4/ Wall of thorns is seriously powerful. Consider plant growth instead.

Cheers, -- N

I had thought on doing something about it but discarded it... thanks.

I modelled it somehow after the Ogre Mage, with the intention to make it more powerful than OM (I actually used a "Eldritch Creature" template made by myself... but that's another story)...
Also, That's why in a first stance I had considered it as a "low"-damage monster (claws dealing 1d6...)

3/ What's the range on the Needles? Most grapple-happy plant-critters are balanced out by a total lack of ranged attacks.
Range of needles, good point, should have included it... plus the initial intention wasn't to make it a grappler by excellence, maybe I could reinforce that point giving it a penalty on grapple checks (due to it's brittle nature)

4/ Wall of thorns is seriously powerful. Consider plant growth instead.
See 2/, the Eldritch template gave 28 spell levels, and maximum spell level was 5 (Ogre mage having Cone of Cold)

Maybe I should add that grapple penalty and reduce it's claw damage...

Regarding the Ogre Mage, it's kinda interesting that it's being critiqued for being a one-trick pony. However, note that Ogre-Mage lacks Plant Traits -- it's a Giant, so it's immune to "Nerf Person" spells, but it's not immune to Sneak Attacks, critical hits, [Mind-Affecting] effects, poison, disease, or the like. Plant Traits are super.

If you want to reduce the grapple-ness, you can just make the critter medium! It's not that bad to have a medium critter with 10 ft. reach (call it "spiked vines" or something ;) ).

Sorry to harp... is 100 ft. the range, or the range increment? If it's the range, that's a lot more limited, of course!

Cheers, -- N
