So the Ildjotun had pulled rank on the Steinjotun leader and was ready for war? Things were becoming complicated, Lord Thyffons suspicions were still hanging in the air, and if the prisoners were to be released safely then the steinjotunen might be the best chance - the Steinjotunen could be reasoned with - but the Northman had no illusions that the Ildjotun and their Isejotun kin would not be so receptive, especially with the idiots already assaulting the front gate. Waythe at least would be sated, she was becoming impatient with these fancy negotiations!

The Barbarian held his tongue though, the bugbears and ogrelings could dig as well as their prisoners could, but the company needed to be quick about it

Gilmlak translates when necessary, and adds: “We also respectfully request that you inform us what you are digging for.

OOC: I don’t think we asked them before. If we did, apologies, I don’t remember. If we didn’t persuasion: first roll 10, if advantage, second roll 23
Im assuming advantage, with the carnage and all…

OOC: last time Laethar just told us the Dirt Giants had found something under the Steading, no details yet

::Your fight might not be with Smolderheart, but I expect that he does not feel the same.:: answered the stone giant.

He considered Gimlak's question, as if reluctant to answer and then sighed, a deep rumbling sound, saying, ::We were tasked to find any artefacts from the forgotten temple. We have found a few. I cannot say what they do, for they are sent off immediately to the Howling Craig for study.::

Doc, still restin', has been half listenin' to the hustle and bustle 'round 'em, and decides to speak some mind to the others.

Reckon we shouldn't go pickin' fights with them that aren't lookin' for 'em. Figurin' if them folk got no quarrel with us, we let 'em to their business, and take care of our own.

OOC:
Have no issue making peace with the Stone Giants- so long as they know that we are going to help the fool idiot's attack later.

Maybe an arrangement, along the lines of, "Don't mess with us, and we will guarantee that no matter what happens, you will continue to be able to dig stuff." Our guys might not like it, but it's probably better in the long run if we free the captives and get rid of the hill giant / raiders.

Thoughts? Am I missing something?

The Colonel accepts the wisdom of the Stone Giant without comment. There is no way the others will see that he is not interested in the wider conflict any more. But that is not his concern. He speaks, hoping he is understood (with hoped-for translation).

"Preserving knowledge of those that have gone before has an innate value, and one that is not always recognized. Your careful and deliberate work is recognized, and should be honoured. We trust that you see that our interests do not meet at cross purposes, even if we must take the dwarves remaining in your service with us when we leave."

The Colonel pauses. When the translation has caught up, he adds a personal note.

"My name is Colonel Gascoyne Ariel DuPont. I am a soldier who has seen too much of fighting. I pray you see that you and I are not at odds here."

"all the prisoners" the Northerner spoke up in the common tongue, though he did not wish to contradict the Colonel "there are more than just dwarves in the cells, I spoke to an elf, and would release them all. The bugbears and ogrelings can dig for the jotun's purpose.

We need the cell keys and passage out, lest the Ildjotun bar our exit
"

Kahru wondered if they would find answers to the further mysteries also - what of Thyffons concerns? Did Nosra really have a dragon? Would he recover the Eagle-bone Whistle? Just what were these giants digging for? ...

OOC: I had taken all the prisoners as given. The dwarves are under this giant's control. He does not seem interested in the prisoners, and I was taking that as a given.Sorry if that was missed. There is no contradiction.

OOC: we can take it as a bit of RP, Kahru's int and cha are only 8, so he might have misunderstood your intentions :). He is also getting impatient to move (and Waythe is in his head wanting action)...

OOC: I think the Colonel is in parlay, but if that is done and accepted, then he can start freeing the prisoners, fully expecting at least one to attack them, but hoping they all are willing to come out in a gang rather than run for it singly. But they'll do what they do.
