(IC) Against the Giants PBP Group 2

FitzTheRuke

Legend
Kahru swung Waythe, laughing as he cut into a nearby giant. The giant roared and brought his club down on the northman with furious blows that would have crushed a lesser man, but only made Kahru laugh harder.

The giant with the crossbow took notice of Duvrael. All intelligent creatures must be wary of a spellcaster, and though it was questionable if hill giants could be considered 'intelligent', they could recognize this sort of threat. The giant aimed and pulled the trigger, and Duvrael was caught between casting his spell, and getting skewered by a lance-sized bolt.

OOC: Kahru did 22 to HG1, who whomped him for 21 & 15 (17 from rage); Duvrael will get hit for 19 by HG2's big crossbow, unless he uses a shield spell?; I need @Maxperson Kaligan & @Snarf Zagyg Doc to go to roll the round.

Doc grimaces slightly, as this cantankerous boulder just won't be put down and keeps knocking him about like some whisky-happy bar brawler. Doc stays still and fires another brace of shots into the what he reckons is the vulnerable parts at close range.

The yuan ti wizard has already cast a defensive spell to avoid being impaled by the giant bolt, and a magical shimmering shield appears before him. The bolt's momentum is neutralized immediately upon impact, and it clatters to the ground.

Duvrael's eyes narrow, and his mouth opens ever so slightly so he can taste the air with his tongue.

OOC:

Well, that's hardly a question, is it? ;)
Casting Shield as a reaction, bringing my AC up to 20 until the start of my next turn.

Kaligan curses in pain as he barely avoids being skewered by the ballista bolt, blood trickling down his back. Quickly recovering from the shock of near death, Kaligan moves with purpose towards the burning hill giant near Kahru. Kaligan slashes the giant and a bleeding wound opens up, then he attempts to thrust his sword into the exposed chest of the giant, but the pain from the cut on his back causes Kaligan to pull up short.

OOC: Kaligan moves to Z-58 Two attacks on HG 1: 1D20+8 = [1]+8 = 9 1D20+8 = [10]+8 = 18 One hit and one miss. Strike + Psionic Strike: 1D8+4 = [7]+4 = 11 1D8+4 = [6]+4 = 10 One hit for 21 points of damage.

Legend
Doc was beginning to get used to this strange rock-creature that rolled into a ball like an armadillo. He waited for it to roll away and unfurl, and he shot it in the relative softness of its underbelly (still plenty hard enough). He'd hoped that it would go down, but once more it curled into a ball and tumbled toward him like a tumbleweed. This time, Doc was ready and he rolled with the blow, taking minimal bruising.

Across the way, Kaligan passed by Kahru and lay into the hill giant from the other side of its great bulk. Donnell fired two arrows with great determination, but in his haste had poor aim - his arrows went just past the giant's large shoulders.

During all of this, the Colonel had retreated behind a pillar to keep his focus on his wind-vortex that had swallowed the stone giants and whisked them away to a windy plane. Instead of following him, the young hill giant called the bear to him, and they made their way toward the north-east.

Lest the others think him a coward, the youth called out (in the giant tongue), "I will call in the guards!"

OOC: Doc did 32 to GD, who did 13 to him (dc16 STR save or knocked prone); Kaligan did 21 to HG1; Donnell missed, even with action surge; Colonel dodged. YHG & bear dashed.

The Colonel feels the Stone Giants, locked away in their pocket dimension, banging away at unseen walls trying t make it back to this world. They will not be happy when they return. From behind his pillar, he sees the barrels along the wall and makes his way to them. As he does, he sees the Young Hill Giant and the Beat in the corner. Poor creature, he thinks, as flames pour from the sky and rain down upon the cowering young giant.

OOC: Concentration on Banishment.
Move to AS61 (35')
Action: cast Sacred Flame: DC 18 save or Young Giant takes 3d8=24 (!!!) radiant damage. Overkill, if it works.

FitzTheRuke

Legend
Radiant fire rained down on the young hill giant - the last surviving offspring of Nosnra and his wives. He hollered in pain as he fell smoldering to the ground. The old bear sniffed at the burnt meat, and lumbered off to lick his lightning-wounds from the relative safety of his straw pallet, which was (though the Colonel did not yet know it) just around the corner to the north-east.

OOC: Colonel killed the YHG; Old Iron Jaws retreated from the fray.

The magical barrier that prevented the giant bolt from stapling Duvrael to the wall is already fading, the wizard once more casting a spell. Another fiery bolt speeds through the air, aimed for the giant with the crossbow.

Without looking if his spell hit, Duvrael moves behind the crates next to the wall, hoping to prevent another bolt from reaching him.

OOC: Casting firebolt at HG2 (move a bit to the right if it's needed to get a good shot), then move to X-60 to gain cover.
Firebolt: 1D20+9 = [15]+9 = 24 (hit)
for 2D10 = [1, 1] = 2 fire damage
:(

Doc loses his balance as the bouler-y varmint knocks him butt over teakettle to the floor. Picking up his hat, Doc lets the hatred course through his veins. Reckon it's time to put that thing down. He remains still, picking his shot carefully.

As Doc's first shot tears through the pesky varmint, he feels the soul leave the lifeless husk and come to him, giving Doc new-found energy and purpose. He uses it to toss off a quick shot at a Hill Giant.

OOC:
Strength Check: 1D20+1 = [10]+1 = 11

Stand up= 1/2 move
Standing still (adv)
First Shot: 1D20+9 = [4]+9 = 13

First Shot: 1D20+9 = [11]+9 = 20

First shot, sneak (surprise), hex: 1D10+9 = [9]+9 = 18
2D6 = [6, 4] = 10

Curse ends, +13 hp

@FitzTheRuke - I think that you didn't take off the 13 hp last round, so it's a wash

Second Shot: 1D20+9 = [7]+9 = 16

(ad and disad cancel out)
Second Shot Damage: 1D10+5 = [1]+5 = 6

Piercer reroll: 1D10+5 = [3]+5 = 8

8 damage to HG1

The Barbarian zealots heart was racing, his whole body heaving as his raging mind swept the room. Some of the giants had been felled, though others remained and Waythe still hungered to destroy them.
guards!” he heard the call even as fire poured down on the cowardly young giant running for them. Kahru‘s eyes went wide but saw that the old bear was able to get away unscathed.

Before that though, the northman had his own problems to deal with; the assailant before him and the schlub with the ballista beyond.

Waythe sang as she struck again…

FitzTheRuke

Legend
Duvrael sent fire at the giant with the crossbow ballista, and the giant sent a spear-like quarrel back at him, which slammed into a crate as the Yuan-ti ducked behind it.

Doc finally shot the rock-varmint dead and felt the rush of its life-force flow. He cocked his pistol and fired it across the room, striking the giant who was swinging a club between Kahru and Kalgian. Kaligan was thumped, but the giant staggered from Doc's bullet and Kahru danced in as the club swung overhead, cutting the giant deep with Waythe who shouted encouragements in Kahru's thoughts.

OOC: Duvrael did 2 fire to HG2 who missed him; Doc killed Galeb Dhur & shot HG1 for 8; Kahru did 23 to HG1. Donnell missed. HG1 did 16 to Kaligan. @Maxperson Hill Giant has 6 HP left. Wanna finish him off? Then maybe go get the crossbow guy?

OOC: Yes, I will finish it off. I'm not sure if that was an offer to just off it, or if you want me to roll. :)

Good point. It's up to you, but usually I get people to roll. But that's only because I have played with a LOT of people who feel like their agency is robbed if they don't get to roll, or who don't like DMs 'making stuff up' (which is ridiculous, of course.) I know that not everyone feels that way. This fight really ought to end here, either way. There's not much point in rolling the round for ~20 HP worth of bad guys left. The first post or two ought to take care of it.

OOC: I agree and do the same thing in my game. When it gets to that point I often just narrate the fight cleanup and we move on. I'm fine with the giant just being dead. :)

Legend
Gimlak crushed the mind of the fire-scorched giant. Before the body had even reached the floor, Kaligan had leaped over it, landing on a giant-sized chair. The giant behind the table was furiously loading his crossbow, and he was much too late to defend himself as Kaligan sprung off the chair and plunged his sword into the giant's chest.

The giant's eyes went wide and he gasped as the last of the air left his lungs. His face went white and he fell while striking his chins on the edge of the table with a loud thump before he rolled off it, onto the floor.

For a moment, the Great Hall of the Hill Giant Steading was calm - there were no giants left to kill.

OOC: Until the Stone Giants return. Fight's over ATM. How much longer can @Kobold Stew the Colonel keep them away?

Tonguez

Kahru spun as Kaligans sword ended the life of the last giant, and seeing no further assailants nearby he let his rage dissipate and with it the sharper sting from the giants blows. It had been a good fight and his muscles ached, but they were not yet at an end.

yes, there are guards beyond the north east door” the barbarian zealot replied to Waythes urging to seek them out, but also loud enough for the others to hear “but first we ought be sure that we are rested and healed

and what is our goal?” Kahru looked around, seeking out the Colonel “are we still heading below to free the dwarfs or do we fulfil Thyffons task and learn more about this alliance of giants?

The Colonel looked at Kahru. "We save the dwarves, First, though: The Stone giants will return briefly -- I can only keep them away for so long. But we can prepare for their return, and if we are careful, we can knock them out. It will mean fighting differently than we have, but if we can make either of them unconscious, or both, we work towards Thyffon's answers. I have only a few seconds, of others would prefer just to leave."
