Tommi knows nothing about how magic items are made, and even less about how they end. He guesses they can be broken, and he guesses the magic can wear out. Did that hold true for this rod? He had no idea. Lionel had found it, and he imagines if he does nothing with it, he could put it back behind the altar and all would return to how it had been before. Until another Lionel came walking by, in 5, or 10, or 500 years. He had no idea.

He's heard of wizard's labs exploding though, he realizes as he tries to bend the rod with his knee. Fiery blazes that consume a whole building, leaving no one alive, and the villagers just never talk about it again. In fact, he's pretty certain he's been told never to mess with magic, whatever that means in practice, as he tires to imagine how big an explosion a little rod like this might cause. Would Lionel and the others be safe? He assumes so, but he doesn't know. Maybe I should have put my gloves on first, he thinks.

Based on no certainty at all, as the young man strains to break the rod foiling the Pit Fiend's ambitions (or accomplishing them; he wasn't entirely sure, admittedly), and wondering how big a fireball might emerge (if any did, or if he were around after the fact to contemplate the matter), he gave himself an extra oomph.

Morgan opened the door and stepped outside to see Tommi trying to break the rod.

There was a knee-jerk panic and the Wizard almost screamed to Tommi to stop. This was an item of power and it could be a useful tool. Also, Pit Fiends were incredibly well connected - they commanded whole armies of devils and had spies everywhere - this being could give them so much information on the Titan and its goals - any number of rumours that may have filtered down to the Nine Hells.

In the end, though, Morgan said nothing. They would find other tools to help their quest. They could find more reliable allies to gain information without compacting themselves with a Devil. Morgan had dedicated his life to protecting the mortal plane against these exact foes and he wasn't about to advise anyone to negotiate with it.

One thing was certain: If Baazka survived the destruction of the rod, the creature would turn its unfathomable ire towards everyone in this group. Even if it was powerless now, this immortal being would find a way to exact revenge...eventually.

Morgan watched with trepidation.

I was curious to identify the rod but I don't think it's in Morgan's personality to deal with devils.

Lunn snatches the rod from the boy.
"No! I didn't chase your friend up here and got attacked by this thing just so you can kill us all. What are you thinking?! Are you thinking? If you want to break it, go further out. And not while under threat."

OOC: @Kobold Stew please a bit of ooc next time. We semi-agreed to let you run out for scouting and Tommi gets mad when we follow and get in trouble...but this is whole another level

yes, pbp is slow, but still, some discussion would be nice. We can wait for one post per person to agree where we're going, right?

also, we have elven archmage close by

Legend
Lunn was not far behind Tommi, holding Lionel. He dropped the halfling and grabbed Tommi's wrist as the young man held the Rod over his head to bring it down with enough force to break it, stopping Tommi from the final act.

The devil looked amused that his actions had caused strife amongst friends. He existed for just such a purpose.

"Now, he said with a smile, "If you are done squabbling. Give me the Rod. I will not ask again."

Vairar relaxes a bit with Lunn stopping Tommi. He repeats his earlier comment.
"Lets just go. Let it be. No good can come of talking to it. We don't know enough. We can destroy it later."

"Let me go, ya big galoot!" Tommi curses at Lunn. "What are you thinking? Don't you see we need to stop it?" He shoots a glance at the smiling Devil, which is the scariest thing the young man has ever seen.

Assuming Lunn releases Tommi and keeps the rod, Tommi steps back and protects Lionel, massaging his wrist. He speaks to Lionel, "Back here, Buddy." There's tears in Tommi's eyes. "Don't talk to it at all. Devils are tricksy, like in the stories. You can't let them offer you anything. Never make a deal. Everyone knows that."

"Ah. Calmer heads have prevailed." said the Devil, looking straight at Lunn. "Or, perhaps thicker heads! Now. GIVE."

He held out his hand and his words were commanding. Lunn felt a nearly uncontrollable urge to obey.

OOC: His last, desperate attempt to get the Rod: Command! dc14 WIS Save for @Neurotic ! And I am sorry if this opens us up to any new arguements! (In particular if he fails!

Morgan recognized the power of magic in the Pit Fiend's words and, even as those words left his mouth, Morgan spoke them in reverse, undoing its magic.

He yelled at the beast with words of Infernal rebuke,

"Gro'lack Skak'kuum!* Enough games, fiend! You have no power here anymore."

Morgan marched with purpose towards Lunn and pulled out silver dust. Morgan sprinkled it over the barbarian as he incanted words of protection.

"I don't know how long you've waited to find this rod but you will suffer to wait longer. Stay here and don't interfere again. If you do, there will be no chance of negotiations."

Morgan was pretty sure they wouldn't negotiate but he wanted to buy time. He could already see Baazka sewing strife in the group. He was hoping the devil wouldn't pass up an opportunity for a negotiation.

"Let's go talk this over." He signalled to the others to join him out of earshot of the Pit Fiend.

Counterspell. If it's only command, that should auto-dispel it. Otherwise, if it's more powerful than 3rd level, he actually fails to dispel it (I rolled an 8 on my spellcaster check). I'll edit accordingly

*some made-up word that I'm pretending is infernal. It's meant to have some kind of power or meaning...I'm not sure what exactly because I'm typing this at midnight but I imagine an abjurer would have cool words of power to pacify fiends.

Casting Protection from evil on Lunn, since he's holding the item.

Lunn frowns and then shakes his head.
"You couldn't possess me on contact. You cannot control me."
He nods his thanks to the mage and speaks to Tommi.
"I apologize if that hurt. You should have run away with it. Let's go back down, out of sight."

Lunn checks that everyone is present and no one stays with the fiend.

OOC: This is more for NPCs, no more surprises. If a PC wants to talk to the fiend, he won't push it. Let's have Morgan identify the thing and we can move on.
