D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

Dandin, Sir Isteval & Sir Darfin

The purple knight sighed and answered, "As far as I can discern, the Duke is convinced that there is an army just over the hill waiting to lay siege to the city as soon as he sends his militia away. He has tripled the watch on the wall and ordered the drill-field cleared for extra training. Marshal Miller will have her hands full for some time."

Sir Darfin added, "My nephew, Kelson Darktreader who is both huntmaster and scoutmaster to the Duke, informs me that there is no such army, and yet the Duke persists in this belief. I will meet with him tomorrow and see what I can do, but I do not have the ear of this man in quite the way I had with the Dukes of old."

“An’ ‘oo or wot got tha’ idea stuck in the Duke’s ‘ead?” Angis asked. “‘Tis daft! This goblin raid was the first trouble we’ve ‘ad in a long while. It seems the more immediate threat.”

"It was Luc Sunbright, I believe. He gave a sermon on the evils of the goblin's god, Maglubiyet and how the conquering god's servant Khurgorbaeyag the Overseer can whip the otherwise goblin rabble into a Host. When a true goblin-host is on the move, it is an army to be feared. His sermon was not untrue, and it was well-meant, but it was ill-timed: This goblin raid occurred too soon after and the Duke is convinced that a host has formed." Sir Isteval explained, trying to not speak too poorly of the Duke, while disapproving of his actions.

"A true goblin host has not formed in a very long time. At least, not one with a powerful leader." insisted Sir Darfin.

"Well, then it stands to reason that he needs specific information? I suppose that is what you're most in need of?"

Dandin considered their options for a moment and then smiled as he looked back up.

"If they're using boats to raid, they're likely camped close to the water. They might hide from an armed patrol. But an unsuspecting trader with wares bound for some port up river? We've got a boat. It may take some time, but the Sullertons can bring it back to it's true calling. 200 gold, is all they ask. I can handle the details and even purchase a cargo. Assuming the need isn't too urgent, I could get some trading in as well."

Dandin glanced around at the others hopefully.

"As ugly as she is, it mai' be a gud idear t'leave 'er all gobbed-up." suggested Jekk, "Per'aps the gobbos wuid leave ye be until ye kin git close to 'em... A ruse, if ye ken wot I mean."

"That sounds reasonable," said Tommi. "No harm ever came to an adventurer on a boat," he said without apparent irony, "...assuming we can use it?"

"More urgent is the name of our company. Are we Invaders? Defenders? Avengers? The Fantastic..." He starts counting the number of the party. "No, that doesn't work. None of those have the solemnity we need.

"The Doughty Daggerfordians." He seems completely happy with this choice, and reaches for another piece of bread.

Dandin scowls at the idea of leaving the boat in such a state. He shakes his head as he replies to the dwarf.

"They know we have their boat. If they see it rowing upstream they wouldn't even need to look inside to know that it's a trap. Give it a few days and a offer up some bait and we're liable to get a nibble."

Squirrels are evil!

"If ye say so. I s'pose e'en a goblin could figger oot they only left wun boat b'hind." conceded Jekk.

"An expedition upriver to find the source of the goblin raiders would be a very fitting adventure for a starting company." said Sir Isteval enthusiastically. "I am sure you have made enough friends among the riverfolk that you could easily hire a competent crew."

"It is very simple, Lady Shalendra.
Considering that Master Gwaereth the Gray has predicted the Thayan menace long time ago.
Considering that he assembled me as a response to this threat.
Considering that he scheduled my activation for this precise moment.
Considering that Master Gwaereth the Gray is perfect and incapable of mistake.

Following a simple and elementary logic, an obvious conclusion can be drawn: Thayans are coming. A statement that must be neither called into question nor compromised. The unknowns are who, how and why. The when being already solved.

Thank you for your precious responses and your proposition, Lady Shalendra."

Turning to Dandin, "I'll follow you if you will have me on board. This time, it would be preferable to conceal my presence. And I should leave my beacon off, I suppose."

Snake wasn’t overly interested in the conversations that were going on around him. He had already decided that the gold was enough to get him on board. The rest was just details and he was certain someone was paying attention to them, maybe even writing them down.

Snake examined some of the food, the meat seemed cooked, who would do that to perfectly good meat he thought to himself as he tried a piece of the cheese and worked on hiding the expression on his face.
