D&D 5E (IC) Scourge of Daggerford

Legend
They'd done some shopping, (and some planning to shop in Enfield) before leaving Daggerford: Dandin had attended a sermon at Morninglow Tower, and endeared himself to Luc Sunbright, who was happy to use the halfling's new minor celebrity to add some status to the affair. Dandin purchased five healing potions there. He had already visited Hadasha at Harvest House, and he and Angis had told her how her friend Estor had died, and how they'd avenged him. They'd bought three potions from her, at an excellent price.

Titus had tried to convince his uncle to lend him a warhorse from the Ducal Stables, but the Duke made excuses, saying that most of the stable was still empty from Lady Morwen's men taking them to Julkoun, and he needed the rest for his dispatches to Cromm's Hold and other important things. Titus did not argue, as he preferred to make his way on his own, as often as possible. He hatched a plan to buy his own horse in Enfield, where he knew of an excellent breeder and trainer.

N7 had shared the Duke's gold, and a plan was hatched to build a communal coach - a 'war wagon' with a mounted crossbow on the hard-topped roof (and room for extra cargo up there), bench-seats and a drop-table inside, with weapon racks on the back and sides. The front would have two cushioned seats, and it would be pulled by two draft horses.

Seeing an opportunity, Dandin invested in horseshoes, buckles, and hinges made by the dwarves of Derval's Smithy, and he hired a young man to handle Hanar and his little cart, and to return it to Zachare when the war-wagon was complete. The old cart was loaded to its maximum, and it creaked under the weight. Hanar was very reliable, and pulled it all the way to Enfield without complaint.

They'd walked to Enfield, where Dandin sold more than half his goods, and Titus and Angis spoke to the horse-breeder and carpenters, and they spent the rest of that first day modifying a heavy wagon to create the Doughty Daggerfordian War Wagon. Titus got himself a freshly trained young warhorse and outfitted it with leather barding. From the same breeder he bought a pair of draft horses who had been raised together and trained as a team.

The following day, the Doughty Daggerfordians left Enfield in style, with Lionel driving the war wagon. He'd never handled so large a wagon, but he'd driven his family's milk wagon, and this was little different. Titus rode ahead, getting used to his fine saddle.

Dandin stood as he was introduced at the dinner. He'd done a good job at not snoozing during his holyness's speech and hadn't seemed too annoyed at being used in such a manner. In truth, Dandin had a reason for wanting this opportunity to speak himself. Several of Daggerford's most elite had been invited to the dinner and Dandin wanted to stir things up for the Dukedom. Now was his chance to get that started.

He'd even broken one of his rules this time around. He was very careful normally to never use his magic to influence the good people of Daggerford. Even this, felt a bit on the underhanded side, though all he was doing was enhancing his own ability to be influential. In fact, he knew it was a common tactic used by everyone from wealth businessmen to kings. It just made him feel a bit... Dirty. Once, right before arriving at the event and then a bit later as he'd excused himself to use the restroom he'd cast his spell, using it to make a good impression on the attendees and now, to influence them.

"Thank you, your holiness, for inviting me to dine with you tonight, and thank you all for your kind and encouraging words. The Doughty Daggerfordians appreciate all of the support that has been offered to us."

"We hope to be able to continue to serve the communities of Daggerford and Julkoun in any way that we can in the future. That said, we are just a few, very few in fact. And our enemies are many. As an example, on our mission to investigate Julkoun, we coeared out a tower full of orcs. Since then, I have been informed, it has been re-occupied, blocking off a critical land route between the two cities. If something happens to cut off the river route as well, Julkoun will be once again stranded."

"We would be more than happy to go clear them out once more, but we've been asked to investigate other incursions farther to the north. We have a healthy contingent of Soldiers here in Daggerford, and many I have spoken to would love an opportunity to take the fight to any threats to the city. In fact, many have lost family members to goblin and of attacks. Unfortunately, they are kept clise to home and are unable to take meaningful action."

"As a merchant myself, I understand fully that the tradeways are the lifeblood of any settlement. And the larger the settlement, such as a citty like Daggerford, the more it relies onnthat trade to survive. It's not my place to ask, but I feel that I must try. We need to find a way to release the soldiers of Daggerford that they might protect our commerce and our people."

"Thank you all for listening to a nere smallfolk's words. Again, we appreciate your support."

OOC: Using 2 castings of Enhance Ability to buff the crud out of his diplomacy checks. First is to make an impression, second is to influence. Assuming that is okay.

Looking at these rolls, I wouldn't have needed the advantage. LOL

Legend
As the Daggerfordians left Enfield, Dandin recalled how he'd left Morninglow Tower. Luc Sunbright was a self-important man, but he was also well respected by the highest ranking people in the city - the Duke, the guild-heads, the wealthy merchants. Aside from Sir Isteval and his friends, and the Wizard Delfin, nearly everyone of import in Daggerford had attended the dinner, and Dandin was very proud of how he'd handled it. At the end of his speech, there was clapping and table-thumping, and a few cries of "hear hear!"

The Duke had quietly nodded, and made no immediate promises, but Dandin was sure that he would be constantly pressured by others to help. Soon enough, Dandin felt, a movement toward proper, intelligent defense would emerge.

Dandin was in the back of the War Wagon, writing letters and doing sums for his shipping business as the wagon gently rocked side-to-side. Enseth sat silently across from him and Dandin wasn't sure what to make of the shield guardian. The big metal construct had always been strange, but he seemed different somehow since returning from Julkoun.

Outside, Tommi was riding next to Lionel while Angis was on the roof. An overloaded wagon rode into a view over a rise in the dirt road. Tommi waved, and the driver pulled to one side, calling, "Ye'd best not go on, friends. Much of us are headin' to Daggerford. Orcs are raidin' the farms near Newfield an' I hear they've got the elf-hold under siege, they do. 'Twas voted this mornin' to move under the Duke's protection. More of us are comin' this way."

Sure enough, another wagon rode into view behind that one.

Dandin climbed out to meet the wagon drover, hoping they could get a few more details.

"Hello friend, My name is Dandinnand we're the Doughty Daggerfordians. Thank you for the warning, but we're actually looking for just such trouble. That said, anything you can tell us about the threat could be useful in our mission. Hopefully we'll be able to do something about it quickly enough to get you back to your homes.

The drover looked pleased and said, "Aye, I've heard of ye. Saved Julkoun, y'did. Happy to make yer acquaintance. I dunno what I can tell ye - the orcs are organised. They come at night an' take what they want. They might give ye a thumpin', but they don't kill unless ye piss 'em off, if ye pardon. They take yer stuff, an' tell ye that they'll be back fer more. We had a meet in Newfield, an' we voted t'take what we have left and shelter in Daggerford. They're coming from the north, so we're going south. If ye keep on, yer like to find some."

Titus road on his new warhorse, a large bay he named Blaze. His coat was a bright crimson, with a black main and hooves to match, often referred to as a "blood bay".

Blaze had proven to be opinionated, liked eating, and didn't much like being told what to do. He was a young horse, and while he was broken and would do as told, he usually did so with an attitude.

Titus had taken to him immediately.

He rode alongside the wagon as much as possible, wanting the horse to get used to him. When the dwarves came up and told of the Orcs, Titus' brow furrowed.

"If we have our way, good Dwarf, then we will certainly be 'pissing them off'," Titus said with a grin. "Thank you for the warning. We will do what we can to help."

Dandin grinned and nodded his agreement with Titus. "Mad is how we'll want them. Take care on your way to Daggerford, we've got your back so there's no need to make any mistakes in haste."

Then he climbed back into the carriage, ready to go.

The only thing Angis added to the design of the War Wagon was to make sure they had shutters they could put over the windows with narrow slats along the walls they could shoot through.

OOC: Basically making sure we can batten down with arrow slits when needed, giving us three quarters cover.

Sitting up top in the basket with a heavy crossbow, Angis eyed the approaching wagons. They looked to be civilians, and when they stopped to trade news, that turned out to be exactly what they were, civilian refugees. “Orcs,” Angis muttered darkly. “Let ‘em try an’ come at us.” He still evaluated the weaknesses of their wagon. The driver and draft horses were still exposed, but it would be a safe place to camp in for the night.

Legend
The road to Newfield

It began to rain lightly as the Doughty Daggerfordians' new wagon rolled along the well-worn road just south of Newfield. They could tell that they were nearing the hamlet as they passed its outlying farms, which appeared to be recently abandoned. From around a bend in the road, as it wound around a rock-strewn rise, came a panicked pig, covered in mud and running for her life. Chasing the sow was an orc - nearly as muddy, and with his arms outstretched, trying to grab her tail. His axe was on his back, and he ran into full view of the wagon before realizing that it was there.

Titus kicked Blaze into gear after the Orc. He drew his sword as he got nearer, holding it towards his new foe.

“Hands up and don’t move,” he said. “Or you won’t live long enough to draw your weapon.”
