D&D 5E (IC) Vault of the Dracolich (Dispensables)

Terrus and Pyrus stayed off to the side, studying this.

These men are amateurs, Pyrus said to Terrus, mentally. If it were me interrogating, I'd have him spilling his guts about every sin he's ever committed.

Not everyone can set their hair on fire and use their mind to exaggerate a person's fear, Terrus replied.

Still, this is taking too long, Pyrus said. We need to get moving if we are going to get moving.

Let me try something, Terrus said.

Terrus walked up to the mercenary leader, kneeling before him. "The Dragon Cult is responsible for numerous atrocities. They stole something from our benefactor. We will be getting it back. Now, we can fight our way in. You've seen how effective we are in that. But we would rather not if we can help it.

"Now, there is likely to be much treasure in the dragon's vault, which is no doubt where the item we are looking for is kept. Those who help us will get a portion of that treasure. It seems to me that our greatest chance of success comes from you joining us. I'm sure they pay you well, but it would be nothing compared to an equal portion of a dragon's treasure.

"What say you? Will you assist us in taking this place, and ridding them of their foul presence, and at the same time making yourself rich enough to never need to work for anyone you don't want to?"

Pyrus, standing a ways back, opened his hand and produced a flame in it, allowing his Unsettling Aura to wash over the man, "Of course, if you betrayed us, whatever happened to us, we'd make sure you roasted. Slowly."

GM: You should give me an Intimidate roll when you say intimidating things, to save time by me asking.

"Look, I'd like to find a way out of this mess, no mistake. But two things - One: There's not really a dragon in there and two: if there is you six are not going to be taking all it's treasure. Sure, I've heard the same stories as you: Skeleton dragon, all that - but it's just a story so these cultists can dig for some forgotten elf treasure. It's a wadda ya call, tall tale. Don't get me wrong - these cultists have some bad magic. Alchemy too. I've even heard there might be a hydra they keep somewhere. Maybe that's where the dragon story comes in."

He shakes his head and sighs, "Bards tales. Anyway, I'll take yer offer of taking me to a magistrate somewhere, but I won't betray the Beast. Not anymore than I already have, anyway."

"It's not just us six," Terrus said, "We have numerous teams infiltrating the place from all directions. Trust me when I say our chances of success are much higher than you might believe. And be it a skeletal dragon or forgotten elf treasure, surely there is enough treasure in there to slate your need for coin."

OOC: Persuasion: [roll]1d20-1

OOC: Yeah, the girls are better at persuasion.

Pretty sure you're not going to murder him, Rowloe replies calmly "You don't know Bardaby. There's a reason they call him 'the Beast'. I've said my piece. I'm not going back there a sell-out."

Bob puts a hand out for silence, staring down at the mercenary captain he nods once, to himself. "I don"t think you are evil man. You fight for coin, which means you have little honor. But maybe enough to do one good thing." Get us in and once the fight begins you may leave. So long as you swear to run far away and never come back."

This said, Bob stares long and hard at the man, making clear that this was his one chance at freedom. "Or you can go to see the 'magic' man."

Squirrels are evil!

Out of sight, behind some rocks, Sesto is listening in on the conversation.
"Good information. No dragon but maybe a Hydra."

Sesto tries to recall what he read about Hydras in the Big Tomb of Beasts back at the temple.
"Nasty beasts, Hydras!"

OOC: History check [roll0]
or Nature, if more appropriate, +0 to the above 1d20 roll

Sesto cannot remember anything but that the hydra is a beast with more than one head.
"I should have paid more attention when I studied the Big Tomb of Beast".
