D&D 5E (IC) Vault of the Dracolich (Dispensables)

Having only pretended to drink the fermented algae, Sesto is feeling very rested. Those cave fungi have never seen so much fermented algae juice before, I bet! Sesto laughs.
Sesto looks up at Bobranthus and points down the cave. Well I think the dragon is that way. But... I am curious about that obelisk near the fighting pit. It looks like it would work as a teleportation device. We maybe should try it out... we could possibly get a little closer to our destination without bumping into any cultists. Sesto looks around expectantly at the group. Hey Bob, surely you want to try the obelisk, right?, Sesto says and slaps the big man on the shoulder.
By the way, let's not forget those Trog offerings. I saw a statuette amongst them that I am sure must be one of these Bhaalite Idols we need.

OOC: Sesto really wants to try the teleportation device!

The cleric still had the sending stone with which to contact the old wizard, who might be able to give them some guidance as to their next course of action.

"I'm hesitant to try the obelisk if we have no idea where it will send us," the Inquisitor admitted. "Too much risk involved. But if Imani has any previous experience with the device from the last time he was here, then at least we wouldn't be teleporting completely blind. Otherwise, it might be safest to continue traveling afoot as we have been."[/td]

Contacting Imani with the Sending Stone:

"We've had some trouble here," the old Sage confesses, "The Temple sent out many patrols scouring the hills through the night. I was able to send them away with my magic, and the help of Corrah and others. Our camp was not discovered, but we have had a restless night."

He listened to your questions with interest, "The Bhaalite teleportation obelisks? I'm not sure what I can tell you. They were a network of short-range transportation devices. I don't know how many, but I expect there will be five or six of them scattered throughout the complex. There should be some way of selecting which one you would like to exit from, but you would probably need to have studied each of them thoroughly. Otherwise, you would almost certainly appear where they were set to go when they were used last."

He thought about it for another moment and added, "If you use one, be prepared for trouble just in case. The Dragon Cultists would have little warning of your arrival, but if they are in the same room as the obelisk, they would see you arrive. You might be able to surprise them, if they expected the obelisks to be inert, however."

Upon hearing the information related from Devan, Bob grins to his allies. "This should be our plan. We can bash many heads of evil." While the others work on sorting the plan out, Bob commences gathering all of the treasure up into his backpack. If he anything strikes him as potentially interesting, he sets it aside for inspection.

Squirrels are evil!

Disappointed at the lack of enthusiasm for the teleportation travel, Sesto concedes and points down the left passage and says, How about that way? Devan, you could try to ask the Trog guards over there if they know where it leads.

Sesto turns around and looks back at the obelisk. Just give me a minute. I want to have a closer look at obelisk before we go. I think I may have missed something obvious on how it works. Sesto looks carefully at all the inscriptions around the obelisk, he even pray to Lathander for guidance but, alas, the function of the obelisk is very strange and alien. Even more disappointed, he turns back to the group and gestures that he is ready to move on.

OOC: Ooops. I read it as Bob agreed with Devan to take the long route to 'bash many heads of evil'. Either way, let's see if Pyrus has any good ideas.

After some conversation, Sesto's strong desire to attempt using the teleporter wins out. The troglodytes figured out that their cavern could be invaded through it, so they moved it (it weighs many hundreds of pounds) up onto a ledge. It's a bit of work to get up there (GM: But no checks involved) and only one person can use it at a time.

OOC: Here's the description again:

The obelisk is on a round dais; one side of it is shaped crudely like a humanoid figure, the other dug-out like a rounded coffin, large enough that one could lie inside it (standing up). There are various arcane markings on both the dais and the obelisk, which is made from a rough red stone.

GM: Sesto can just figure out how to activate it.

It hums and spiral patterns in the base and details (like the eyes) on the figure glow red.

(You step backward into it like you're standing in a coffin. Presumably, you then step out of another one.)

GM: Who's going first? I assume Bob? Gimme a "marching order". Might as well roll initiative too, just in case.

Whenever Bob goes, a small group of trogs who have awoken and are watching you with interest chatter and point, "Bob-Runt-Hiss! Akarr-hiss Dretch-Rroy-Assstarr! Hrrrasssakkaaa!"
