Blog (A5E) Level Up: Magical Items & Wondrous Artifacts

5th Edition has quite the array of magical items for adventurers to discover and use. And of course, Level Up: Advanced 5E has, too! I like the mechanic of "cast this spell, roll a d6. On a 6 you can do it again, else the ability is expended until a long rest". A nice inverse recharge roll.

On the "+2 ability score, to a maximum of 24"....I think you can just drop the caps. These are artifacts...they don't have limits. If my 20th level barbarian with 24 strength gets a +2 strength artifact, than by gum let him have his 26 strength!

Okay so I have seen a very rare staff of fire for 12000 GP and an uncommon pipes of haunting for 500 GP. As a DM, I am very very interested in a gold distribution table… anyway we could see just a small portion of it… just a little peak.

Also, my players love to harvest from dead monsters. Any thoughts on a value for creature CR defeated?

Also, is buying magic items still a downtime activity?

Any chance we could either see the steps it would take to make pipes of haunting… will there be ability checks or maybe just a small screenshot of the crafting magic items table!

Those three artifacts are seriously cool. I was somewhat uninspired by the list of generic artifact benefits, and the way it's written it implies that all artifacts should just be a collection of abilities from these lists. However, the actual artifact writeups were awesome. It might be useful in the final product to add some explanatory text letting people know that the lists are jumping off points.

I also don't think that greater powers should be capped at 7th level spells or at just 2 of them. A Staff of Power, which isn't even an artifact, has 5 5th level spells and a 6th level spell.
