Pathfinder 1E [LPF] Blessed Are the Cheesemakers

Systole

First Post
The last two boars fall to the ground, utterly lifeless, their injuries at last too great even for the rage that fueled them.

The dairy itself is quiet now, although the smell of rotting milk and rotting meat is almost overwhelming. The boars must have been drawn in by the cheese, as they had obviously been feasting on the wheels that are aging on heavy wooden shelves. Three corpses -- two women and a man -- lie at various points around the room. The man looks as if he were somewhat elderly, and doesn't otherwise match the description of the Weathersmith brothers.

The boars seemed to have preferred eating the cheese to meat, and since their presence kept the smaller predators away, the bodies don't seem to have been interfered with after death. A cursory examination suggests the women died to multiple stab wounds, while the man was crushed. The dairy and the surrounding houses and pastures are otherwise quiet, excepting the scavenging ravens and coyotes that quickly withdraw whenever you approach.

[sblock=OOC]Some skill rolls would be helpful here. I suggest at minimum Heal to find out more about the bodies and Survival to look for any tracks. Any other rolls you think might apply, please feel free.[/sblock]

Ru Brike, human slayer

"I wouldn't worry about it, Sparky," Ru calls to Pirvinia as he wipes his blades clean of boar blood.

The southerner returns the swords to his magical rucksack, once again claiming his bow and arrows as he adds, "Seems to me you got the bacon cooking well and proper, or else things might have been a lot bloodier for us than they were. Besides, scars make most men better looking. It's rugged."

He crosses the open field to the main building to join in the search, frowning and shaking his head as they discover the human bodies. He pulls a small, glowing stone from his belt pouch. With a flick of his wrist, he sets it to orbiting his head, providing him light to see in the darkened barn.

Ru kneels by the dead, searching them for more clues as to exactly what happened, and how long ago. When he's done with the bodies, he turns his attention to the ground, trying to separate the various divots in the ground into some kind of map of just who had been here, and where they might have gone.

Iago looks at Tsaaruck's injury. "Have any of you strong healing magics?" he asks. "I have a wand that would help, but its power is limited."

[sblock=ooc]
Once the healing situation is sorted out, Iago will go inside to investigate. He will inspect the bodies (HEAL) and also make a general search of the place for anything out of the ordinary, such as arrows, hidden spaces or bloodstains not associated with the corpse (PERCEPTION - note his +2 bonus for finding hidden objects, traps and doors).
I have a bunch of other rolls he can make, but will hold off until we get some other results.

Heal, then Perception (1d20+4=10, 1d20+11=30)

Heal is 10, Perception is 30, or 32 for hidden objects & doors

Tsaaruk watches both boars go down and looks around with no other threat obvious he calms and feels the weight of the battle settle on him as though he were moving through thick mud. A feeling he knows well. The first time he thought he was dying but now knows it as the warriors sacrifice for the strength Torglarok has given him. As he feels the sting of the wound he looks himself over and decides it is an ugly wound but should not prove fatal. As he gathers himself he notices the others moving about inspecting the building. "I have a healing wand if someone could use it to close this wound." He holds his wand od CLW out for someone to use.

Pirvinia’s eyebrow lifted at Ru’s attempt to find a new nickname for her, “Thank you for the confidence. But… ah, ‘Sparky’ sounds like a name for a dog, Ru. Keep trying if you would.”

She was more concerned that her magic allowed to the half-orc warrior to be injured. Without a real healer, they were relying on wands and perhaps a spell from Samad.

Pirvinia was not skilled in tracking or examining dead bodies, so the sorceress remained mounted. Mazi continued to fly around keeping watch from above.

As the others were looking around with closer scrutiny, she called out, “Let us know if you find something.”

[sblock=OOC Clarification]Originally I thought we were checking a small cottage, but now I am a little confused. Have we actually investigated the large building yet and discovered the large boars were what was inside?

Samad took the wand from Tsaaruck's hand, before using it for its intended purpose. It was strange to say, but as the energy poured through him, the channeler seemed only to hold it back, almost like a single spout in a larger dam, holding back the flood. Still, perhaps it was a good thing. He should conserve his own energy, as it was good practice, like conserving water in the desert. He handed the wand back.

"You impress me, with the pain you can continually endure." He bowed, and took another stock of the surroundings.

Ru looks over the bodies, and determines little more than what was immediately obvious. The women were killed by stab wounds from small blades -- daggers or short swords, most likely. The old man was killed with a single, solid blow to his torso from a crushing weapon like a club or mace, but it must have been something even larger than the mighty hammer that Tsaaruck wields. Bloody bootprints tracked through out the dairy offer further evidence of one large humanoid and at least a dozen smaller humanoids. In the soft soil of the meadow, it's not hard to follow the raiders' tracks off the northeast, where they lead further into the forest.

Iago searches the dairy for clues and finds two things of note. The first is a large, blackish-grey feather that had come to rest on a fallen stack of quite large cheese wheels. The feather is definitely not from a raven or a crow, but before Iago can examine it further, he realizes that the pile of cheese wheels cover a trap door to a cellar ... and that there's quiet breathing coming from the other side. The wheels are probably 150 pounds apiece, and you'd have to shift a dozen to access the trapdoor. It's probably can't be done without alerting whoever --or whatever -- is listening.

[sblock=OOC]As per posts previous to combat, Samad and Ru fanned out a bit to check the surrounding buildings while everyone else moved toward the main building. The boars in the main building aced their Perception roll, and so were alerted to your presence. The first boar charged out of the building, while you pinned the other two inside. One of those was the big thing that Mazi saw. As there are no other major threats (at the moment), I skipped past the part where you searched around for imminent danger.

K:Local to further identify bootprints. K:Nature for the feather. If you attempt to communicate with whatever is in the cellar, social skill rolls would help.

Also, I need a Perception roll from Samad (and only Samad), because of a thing.[/sblock]

"I can tell you there was one big one and a bushel of little ones running around here at the stabby-smashy party, but I'm afraid I can't tell what they were," Ru says. He points out the bloody prints to those who have a better understanding of the foot shapes of various humanoids.

When they find the trap door, Ru looks to the others.

"So, that's either someone hidden from the attack, or someone who managed to get stuck trying to attack. The former seems more likely. If they hear us moving their cover without identifying ourselves, they're likely to panic even further. Might do for us to try to communicate before we start, see if we can calm their fears.

"Even if it is a hostile, they'd know we're coming, anyway, so it's not like we're ruining the surprise. Let them know we're not the attackers returned, and we're much more likely to avoid giving them apoplectic fits while we work."

[sblock=ooc]Ru's not trained in any Know skill, so I don't imagine these do anything, but just in case they're common humanoids with a really low DC:

Know: Local; Know: Nature (both untrained) (1d20=14, 1d20=2)

Ru also doesn't have much to add as far as Diplomacy goes, but I'll throw in an Aid Another just in case:

Diplomacy Aid. (1d20+2=11)

Iago roots about the room, looking at the spattered blood and spilled fluids with the eye of one who spent much of his youth surrounded by far more noxious chemicals. He stops abruptly to pick up a lone black feather, and stares at it curiously.

Wordlessly, he reaches over his shoulder into his pack and produces a battered copy of "The Angry, Barefoot Woodsman." He flips through B. Bitterleaf's weighty tome, ignoring the author's tendency to hurl abuse at the reader and focusing on his insightful analysis of the plumage of the many avians who are also the target of his ire.

The half-orc is just finishing his search when he notices the seam on the floor where he is standing. He silently puts the text away and draws his falchion, gesturing to the others with motions indicating a door.

"So, that's either someone hidden from the attack, or someone who managed to get stuck trying to attack. The former seems more likely. If they hear us moving their cover without identifying ourselves, they're likely to panic even further. Might do for us to try to communicate before we start, see if we can calm their fears.

Iago resists the temptation to sigh, and keeps the frustration out of his voice. "I'm fairly sure they heard you," he offers Ru.
