[LPJdesign] Haven: COV to Go D20 Modern!!!

Probably because Louis P has a special place in our hearts, his place is right between hypocrit politicians and pushy car dealers. This guy profilated himself in the past as one of those "D20 is evil incarnate" people, if you can find one of his old rants go read it, it's bound to make you look at him in a whole different light. Now he's seeing that D20 isn't going the way of the dodo and that there might actually be some money in it for him, suddenly he's a D20 'publisher'. I just don't have any confidence in someone that can flip his 'ideals' so suddenly when money is involved... Especially when he pays his writers/artist/editors so damn little.

Well then let me explain why I made the change. I have been working on Haven: City of Violence for the last 7 years. The concept of doing a modern setting game for WOTC only came up a few years ago. Based on TSR & WOTC past support of the modern genre game systems (Dark Matter is a prime example) I was a little PISSED that they were going to do something like this again. I surely did don't what to buy a games system that would be supported by 3 products then canceled. Haven: City of Violence is something a worked a long time with to make sure that we would build it in a way to make people have fun with it at the same time supplying people with product to make sure the line would survive on its own strength.

After putting Haven: COV in to the market we have gotten a good response, but the comment I heard most was, “I would play it, but it is not D20 Modern, and since I don’t what to learn more new rules, I would not play it.” Now think about that for a second as a business person and publisher. You have people saying they would play it, but only if you changed the “engine” of it. They didn’t say they would play it because it was “bad” or “poorly constructed”, they did not play it because they did not what to learn a new game system. So tell me what would you do as a business person and publisher who is trying to be successful? Ignore the people and not give them what they are demanding?

Now for my bashing of D20 Modern versus Haven: COV that is very easy. I am a small independent gaming company with a staff of 3 people working with me and I am going against Hasbro, Inc. with thousands of employees and a budget equal to some small nations in the world. Since they can kick my ass in every way shape and form in the business arena, what can I do to get some of the people that would be interested if they go a chance to see it? I act like a terrorist and go after their weak points. Terrorist, that is what the big, well equipped and well trained army call the small poorly trained and poorly funded army. To the British Empire, George Washington was a terrorist and to WOTC and am a terrorist, and I am going to act like one. Most of you have never played Haven: City of Violence but you have heard of it. Many of you would not have “heard” about Haven: COV if it not for my D20 Modern bashing ads. The ads found a weakness in the D20 Modern system and exploited it. Sun Tzu was right, “Business is war” and I have to use every weapon in the world to “win”.

Now to my payment of my writers, artist and editors, I am sorry that we can not pay writers 10 cents a word to write, artists $100 a page and editors 5 cents to edit, but we can’t. Like I said before we are a SMALL gaming company we don’t have that kind of budget. But if you feel I don treat any of the people that work for me correctly then why don’t you contact them directly and ask them. I have links for most people who have worked for me at these links:

You can e-mail these people directly and talk to them about how I have treated them and how much I paid. Then you can judge me on my business tactics.

Like I said before I am making the change to D20 Modern because it is a GOOD BUSINESS DECISION. Giving people what they want is at the heart of business and why certain companies hang so long. Well I want to be one of those companies. So once and again I am going to have to place my ego aside and do what is right for the company.

Hmm... What paying alright? 8,000 to 15,000 words for $100, is that paying alright? I've heard similar stories on the art. I wasn't talking about ten cents on the word, but four would be nice, as it's the average in this business.

As for your 'terrorism', your a 'publisher' for heaven's sake, how are your customers supposed to take you seriously? In the past you've been nothing but rude concerning D20/OGL and the people who play/support it. Now we're supposed to forgive and forget because you finally saw the dollar signs and your theory that the D20 bubble would burst bombed? You are more than welcome to your own opinions regarding D20/OGL, i can respect that, but when you start advertising yourself as an anti D20/OGL activist and ranting away against anyone and everyone who wanted to hear it, that's a whole different story. I do have to say that this has been two or three years ago, but i do have a long memory, i sure hope that others also have a long memory.

I do agree that also supporting D20 (modern) is a good move business wise, it opens you product to a whole new market. But that doesn't erase your track record in the D20/OGL market, and i'm going to make damn sure people don't forget that.

Sun Tzu was right, “Business is war” and I have to use every weapon in the world to “win”.
Sun Tzu never said that, Sun Tzu was a general, not a CEO. This is just one manager's interpertation of Sun Tzu's discussion on the strategies of war, not some kind of holy bible.

I say give the guy a chance, and if his product improves and is worthy of the $$$ then more power to him and to the future of D20 modern. We have all said stupid :):):):) that later make us want to kick ourselves in the ass.

I don't run around playing the 'police.' Just like when the d20 modern board was by itself....we dont' have any here. If this would have happened in general, it would have been taken care of in the first 2 hours.

I don't bust Vigilance, or Dana_Jorgensen, or any other publisher who recommends their product to someone who ASKS about what to buy. But a press release (as seen in the style of the first post) doesn't belong here.

Aside from that, he's also known as an outright spammer. Last August, RPGnow received so many complaints about their customer email system being used to spam his products, that he was instructed to reduce his rate of use to one mailing per week (still quite excessive IMO) or lose access to that tool.

There's no excuse for "terrorism". It just strengthens the offenders total lack of position.

There's no "excuse" for being rude, obnoxious, and annoying, especially to the customer base.

I was here for the past acts of "terrorism" ... just comparing your actions to that sort of behavior pushes me away from any additional looks at your product. At least initially.

You've got a talent for sticking your foot in your mouth, man.

All I have to say is the same thing Ranger REG said.

SWEET!

Guys, it is more D20Modern goodness. Pretty simple really. I am glad to hear it is getting re-tooled for D20M. I plan to pick it up when it does come out.

Erm... Do i need to point out that your very first post is incredibly positive in a thread that is relatively negative. Do i also need to point out that your opinion is therefore suspect. Even more so the topic's starter becomes suspect when suddenly one-posters start showing up and praising your product.

Spam complaints and random sniping...

Yawn

I think this is a potentially very good thing. WotC seems to think that "you don't need a setting since it is outside your window." That's dumb. The publishers of the most pervasive rules-and-resource heavy game on the market should be perfectly aware that their audience needs material to run with their games.

I may not use H:COV the way it was intended as a setting; John Woo ain't my thing. But hey, a hazardous city that gun-toting PCs will be at home in? I think I could make use of that.
