It might be interesting to ditch the flurry and give them bonus virtual TWF/ITWF/GTWF feats and keep the unarmed damage at 1d6 (the equivalent of a good club) but give them bonus weapon specialization and greaterWS in unarmed combat - so with full BAB by 12th level they would be attacking +12/+12/+7/+7/+2/+2 for 1d6+4+Str. Lots of somewhat weaker blows would seem to fit the archetypal flurrying martial artist quite nicely.
