New to D+D. Questions...

If you are looking for a plethora of example character sheets ... go to the Rogue's Guild forum. For example, look down at the bottom of my post and click on the box that says "show." That will bring up several links - all games here on ENWorld that I DM.

{In fact, if you are looking to try out a game online just to learn the basics, I could run you through a quick one shot with you as the player - but only if you wanted. A lot of that would depend how much time you spend online here to see whether it would be effective. PbP (That's Play-by-Post) games are notoriously slow!}

Any, I digress. If you look in my sig, you'll find a few links with the "RG" label. That stands for Rogue's Guild. Following those links will give you the character sheets of the players in my games. Check them out if you'd like. It gives you a chance to test out your knowledge of the rules and see if you can follow how the players got the numbers they did. {Do me a favor, though. Don't post in those threads. Post questions here ... or if you are really brave you can ask me directly in the corresponding OOC thread.}

Anyway, welcome to the game. I hope you get your questions answered.

In order,
It's ok! Yes, I guess it is lazy, so seriously you're right! No ones rushing me to post, so there's really no problem. Yes this board is a great resource, I've figured out a lot from it and I'm just about ready to start
I don't really know why I always choose to play as a paladin. Somehow I like the combination of holyness and strenth. I don't know why, but clerics bother me :p
I like the abilities like Lay on Hands and the armor capabilities and all that stuff. It's really in my opinion THE all around class. Later I do plan to play as a Sorcerer, Druid, and other classes, but for now I would like the Paladin to be my main, even though I'm not advised to play as it according to the character quiz on the wizards website. (They told me in a gnome cleric.) Or the quick start character creation because they tell you the easiest class to play. Paladin is not one of them, but I just really like them since I first tried them in World of Warcraft. By the way, should i abbreaviate that as WoW? Because that is really what most people call it even in a real convesation.
Lukee,

Note that clerics in DnD are quite different from the priests of WoW. For one, they are the only class apart from Fighters and Paladins that know how to wear heavy armor. A cleric of a martial deity, like Heironeous, could be almost indistiguishable from a Paladin.

Actually the best all-round class from core only classes is the bard.

The class can do pretty much everything, although it can generally do nothing (except interaction) as well as the other classes.

It can fight and wear armor.

Has decent hit points (d6)

Great skill points (6+ Int mod)

Can cast arcane spells

Can cast cure spells

Cast spells without memorization

But for a new player it is also a difficult class to play because of the diversity.

Best (as in easiest to understand) starting classes (IMO) are:

Fighter
Ranger
Barbarian
Monk

While a bit more difficult the next batch can still be done with a little more effort:

Rogue
Sorcerer
Cleric
Druid

The following are probably the most difficult to start with because of the details involving the class:

Paladin
Wizard
Bard

Oh yes, I know, I checked out the cleric but a paladin has better armor and a higher hit die. A cleric would obviously be my second choice, but i think that paladin is better overall. Yes it would be almost indistinguishable but not totaly. The first time I heard of a cleric I thought that it would be the equivalent to a WoW preist and found I was wrong. Thanks, however, for the advice.

Awesome! I would love to start with a challenge :lol:

And I thought the hardest part would be to score a paladin miniature...

Ah.

So, you're looking for a group, then.

If that's the case, you'll probably want to wait to make a PC until you learn
  • A) What the current party composition is, and
  • B) Whatever house rules there are about creating PCs.
For my current group, as an example, your paladin would overlap with the roles of others, and I have pretty tight restrictions on how to create a PC (28 pt stat buy, for example).

So: Is there a group you are about (or hope) to join? :cool:

Wait a minute, back up here.

What's a PC?

And what were those two suggested builds in the complete warrior book? Can someone post the stats you need?

Maybe I'm saying this all wrong. In the past games I played, it wasn't just "invest in this, put more in this..." You needed an EXCACT number, because your character doesnt grow unlimitedly, you got like one skill point each level and had to put it in the stat you wanted and couldn't change it. That is my concern here.

And does anyone here collect minis? I have only 2 epics so far and im just starting my collection. Those are

-Aspect of Moradin
-Aspect of Tiamat

I've been getting Angelfire trying to get the mounted paladin but I'd be happy to trade someone for it...

PC = player character

player is you
character is the person you are playing, ie. paladin
OOOOOOHHHHHHH

ok thats a little more simple. But there are no house rules yet and our DM is just starting as well. I'm pushing everyone in our group to not go for an evil class because a paladin cannot willingly or knowingly work with them. Code of Conduct.... (sigh)
