In Discord, dom asked "Can you explain what happens if we hunker down as groups and remain tied together?" Thought I'd share answer here too for @Aethmud and @Steve Gorak ...

If everyone hunkered down, I'd let anyone with Advantage give up their Advantage to allow a PC who already used the pitons (i.e. Corse, Alma, or Logrim) and who is linked to you on the rope chain to be able to use your support/piton to make a Strength save. For ex, Russet is roped to Arik & Corse, so he could give up his advantage to let Corse use his support/piton – you and Corse would both roll DC 10 Strength saves. Succeed? you find a little ledge and the avalanche pours over you. Fail? you get swept away by the avalanche.

AFTER all this the rope connections come into play.

There'd be a cascade of Strength saves that will require adjudication based on what actually happens. BUT, anyone with pitons set/active (i.e. Russet, Arik, Zeth, Jack, Lumrolur) who hasn't been swept away already can automatically succeed this Strength save to arrest falling friends.

The Strength save would start at DC 10, then increase +1 per PC away from the point of fall. For ex, let's say Lumrolur cuts himself free and dashes to safety, Russet is swept away (so he no longer has a piton set/active), but Arik succeeded earlier. Arik's piton would catch both Alma and Russet.

However, Alma and Russet would take a bit of fall damage, measured from Arik as their anchor... looks like ~10 feet for Russet and ~15 feet for Alma, so they'd both take 1d6 fall damage.

We've been discussing on discord and the current plan is for logrim to burn an inspiration, and take the sled to the vanguard where Russet will hold up the sled while bracing against the pitons. Logrim will cast sheild which will make sure it can cover logrim, aric, alma and zeth. Alma may also enhance ability to help Russet hold back the snow.
Vor can escape himself, and jack can fly.

Do Jack and Aric have any different ideas? (Also get to discord to join in!)

Im trying to use Aric’s spells creatively and I’m thinking that entangle would hold the group and perhaps help with damage mitigation (difficult terrain should slow down the snow). This plus shield plus the sled is probably the way to go.

Everyone would need to be in a 20 ft square and the vines would hold everybody in place (we would all need to voluntarily fail the str save).

What do you think?

What I'm understanding so far... and correct me if I've misunderstood? or if you have a different suggestion for resolution? (attached a very rough illustrative sketch)

PCs in front & rear automatically get to safety by…
Lumrolur = cutting rope and sprinting to safety
Jack = cutting rope and flying above avalanche - sound right @Aethmud ?

Edit: Ludo the Steel Defender can sprint to safety & Boy can hunker down with party in the sled? Sound good @VLAD the Destroyer and @Steve Gorak ?

SLED
AC irrelevant cause it’s getting hit by avalanche no matter what;
normally would protect 4 Medium PCs (2 Small = 1 Medium) but shield extends its coverage/protection to 5 Medium PCs;
27 hp (like a cart) – avalanche deals 5d6

Russet = spend Inspiration (flashback to bringing buried sled from last scene) & making a hard (DC 15) Strength save to brace the sled (has pitons in place)

Aric = entangle (has pitons in place), will need to make a DC 10 Concentration/Constitution save to maintain concentration but if succeeding then restrained acts as pitons for unclipped PCs (Corse, Alma, and Logrim)

Corse = @Kobold Stew did I forget what action Corse was taking? (unclipped)

Alma = move + enhance ability (Str) on Russet, will need to make a DC 10 Concentration/Constitution save to maintain concentration (unclipped)

Logrim = move + shield extended to Sled on round when avalanche hits to extend its protection to 1 more PC (unclipped)

Zeth = move + fire bolt or burning hands? to lower the DC on Russet’s Strength save by 1 for every 5 damage of fraction thereof (has pitons in place) -- does that sound right @Necropolitan ?

Whew! To resolve this I'm thinking...

First, Zeth would roll damage & Aric would roll DC 10 Concentration/Constitution save for entangle & Alma would roll DC 10 Concentration/Constitution save for enhance ability.

Then we’d determine the save DC facing Russet who’d roll Strength save, and whether he gets Advantage from enhance ability.

If Russet fails save or damage to sled >27, you’re affected by avalanche (cross that bridge if/when we get to it).
