D&D 5E Out of the Abyss IC

Kamael noticed the quaggoth's loot and smiled as he made eye contact with the creature, wondering how smart it was.

"Thanks for your help. You like shiny stuff, eh? Mind if I have a look?"

If the quaggoth doesn't seem to object, Kamael goes down the trap door.

Jimjar shrugged at Brinn, replying in Undercommon, "I dunno much about this place, but I can get us to my home city. Blingdenstone. There's a way to the surface from there, or so I've heard. Never been to the surface, but you have the look of someone who's seen too much sun and wind." Jimjar paused and glanced at the myconid. "That thing, whatever it is, probably came from Neverlight Grove. If it's a sproutling--I've never seen one that looked like that, though--it'll want to go home to its folk. Queer lot, myconids." Turvey piped up, his voice a gnarled tangle of jumbled words that Brinn had trouble making out but the jist of which seemed to be Turvey's reluctance to head to Blingdenstone.

Inside the stalactite, Plain Quaggoth grunted at Kamael and clutched its prize tighter. It said nothing in reply, but exited the stalactite, leaving Kamael to his own devices. Kamael wasted little time scooting down the rope ladder. The next room down was lower in the stalactite's point and therefore smaller. It was incredibly well-appointed, however. Inside, the walls were hung with black mesh resembling a spider's web, extending from a central spot on the ceiling in a tent out to the walls, then draping down like curtains. Thick, woven mats covered the floor, and a low platform covered with cushions and pillows rested to the side. Kamael was in someone's bed chamber, and judging by the quality of the furnishings, it was someone important. One side of the chamber was a small table and two chairs adjacent to a small shrine to the Goddess of Spiders. A heavy chest of black-stained wood perched at the food of the pillow-covered divan bed. Kamael spied an open cut-out in the floor that appeared to lead down to a second chamber beneath this one.

OOC: Cool description of dancing lights, GlassEye. Solace wakes up with the healing she's received, Kobold Stew.

Kamael gives the chest the once over, then moves back as far as he can before using a spell to open the lid.

OOC:
presumably a Perception check to see if it is trapped:
[roll0]

If not trapped & not locked, use a Mage Hand spell to open it from up to 30' away.

OOC:
Ok, keeping that same roll would then be an investigation of 14 (iirc Investigation is Int based, not Wis). I always get mixed up which one is used when! :)

Kamael looked over the chest. It didn't seem trapped. The bed chamber was small, perhaps a hair less than ten feet in diameter. Kamael stood as far away from the chest as he could get--ten feet--and cast mage hand. A spectral hand wavered into being, and Kamael mind-directed it to the chest. The chest lid, however, wouldn't lift even after the hand pulled upward on it. In the darkened room, Kamael heard and saw the tink of metal; a small needle sprang from the lip of the chest lid and fell to the mat. The lid remained shut.

OOC: ALL: Reminder that Perception checks suffer disadvantage in dim lighting. A dark area counts as dim lighting for a character with darkvision.

Dexterity DC 15 to unlock the chest using thieves' tools. If you attempt it, please also provide another Dex DC 15 roll to attempt to disarm any lingering traps, as well as a Con DC 13 saving throw. Just in case :D

Kamael shrugged, then climbed back up to the others. When he got there, he reported to the others what he had found while he searched Asha's body for any sign of the chest key.

OOC:
There should still be light nearby from Solace's spell, if not he will cast another light cantrip.

I want to wait for the other characters to take a turn before proceeding! :)

It was utterly black on the chasm floor, and, had it not been for the magic cast upon his person by Kamael, Brinn would've been able to make out next to nothing. The front of Brinn's tunic burned brightly with magic, shedding light in a twenty foot nimbus of clear light, and another twenty feet of dim light beyond that. Brinn waited for his eyes to adjust. He could see Jimjar, Stool, and Turvey, and a limited amount of terrain within a forty foot scope. By straining his ears, Brinn could additionally hear the drip of water. The ground beneath the basket was dry and made of compacted sandstone. Brinn could hear the roar of the waterfall, and spied the edge of the pool roughly forty or fifty feet to his north. The cliff face was to the west. And he could see the natural rock of another cliff face to the east, perhaps thirty or forty feet away. From his present position, Brinn could not detect any passageway out of this place.

Turvey was quiet for now, but Brinn could sense Stool's anxiety through the telepathic bond; the sproutling didn't know the way home to Neverlight Grove, only that his need to return was desperate. Brinn heard Jimjar speak. "I don't know the way to Neverlight Grove, no. Only that it's sixteen days or so to the south and west of Blingdenstone, though that's by word of mouth and not direct knowledge. By my reckoning, we'd need to take the north passageway out of here and either cut across or go around the northeast curve of the Darklake to get to Blingdenstone. It's thirty days of walking if we loop around the northeast curve of the Lake. Less if we cut across the Lake, but I mislike that way. It's dangerous and I don't know the lake. There's a kuo-toa city about eight days on foot from here, and it's on the shore of the Lake. If Shuushar survived the fight, he might know. He's kuo-toan." Jimjar paused. Brinn could hear the uncertainty in his voice. "No matter which way we head, it'll be tough without food and drink."

Kamael left the chest untouched inside the bed chamber. He noted the open cut-out in the floor of the bed chamber, but left it alone for now. Returning up top to the others, Kamael bent over and searched Asha's body. He found a set of keys to the outpost on her belt.

OOC: Solace's light spell is still in effect, despite her being unconscious (doesn't take concentration to maintain), but she cast the spell on the handrail to the rope bridge (post #190). Unless she also cast light on Kamael (I hadn't thought she had?), it would've been pitch black when Kamael went down below into the bed chamber. The light spell will still be in effect on the rope bridge handrail, however. The spell lasts an hour. It might be a good idea to cast it on your person so that it moves with you. Or not...that's make you a sitting duck target in the dark.

OOC:
You're right, I'd forgotten it would have been dark in the stalactite. However, I believe Kamael cast light on the front of Brinn's tunic/rags/shirt, so actually he is the one walking round like a sitting duck! *smirk*
