D&D 5E (2014) Out of the Abyss IC

"Thank you Shuushar, that is very helpful. I'll be sure to remember what you said about not scratching my head, and not waving, and will warn the others in our group. I hope that archipriest Ploopploopeen is as wise and peaceful as you! Am I right in assuming that you revere the same deity, and said deity does not request living sacrifices? I hope that the suggestion does not offend, merely being cautious..

On that note, you did not say whether slavery is legal in Sloobludop - what is likely to happen if we encounter guards? I suspect Kago and Brinn may react with violence to the prospect of being taken into custody.."

Shuushar blinked and paused a long time before replying to Kamael. "We were once the slaves of mind flayers. No, we do not hold with slavery. Though, it has been some time since I was home. I worship no God." The kuo-toa turned pensive at this last, and offered no more.

OOC: Everyone has had a turn to declare the pace, so the next person to respond gets to set the pace for the day: fast, normal, slow. If anyone wishes to do something before setting off on the day's march, I need to know before 6 pm US eastern this evening.

OOC: Kamael will take a look at anything Raza has found and see if it is magical:
[roll0].

I'd like to discuss with the others whether we want to just march in to the kuo-toa town, or if we want to be a bit more cautious, like stopping outside and sending Shuushar in to see how much things have changed since last time. Anyone not trust Shuushar, or just want to throw caution to the wind?

Slow pace please, since we may encounter kuo-toa patrols!

Raza and Kamael, who both handled all the items, instantly tell the heavy glass orb that fits in the palm of a hand is imbued with magic. The other items are mundane.

Solace interprets the Deep Gnome's words for Brinn.

"He's proposing a bet with you, Brinn. He's got a map, to a tomb it seems, from our former captors. He wants you to wager something of equal value. He's suggesting that Mother Raza will draw first blood in our next combat." Solace is amused at Jimjar's offer, and is interested if he has anything to offer.

Raza Thulcandra

Raza worked with Kamael to bundle up the items she discovered in the hollow. She felt inordinately pleased with herself and so she winked at Kamael then laughed out loud. They were close to a city, they had goods they might trade, who knew what would happen next?

"Do you recognize these tools of brass, Kamael? Later, perhaps, we can take a break and you can decipher the markings. And did you get the same sense from the orb that I did? Magic, by my word." She was clearly eager to examine it with more thoroughness but, also, the city beckoned.

Marching onward, Raza seemed much more comfortable with the more sedate pace.

As the group travelled onward, Kamael reflected on how he was adapting to life in this strange underground environment. Surviving was a challenge but he was mentally prepared for that since that had been the case his entire life. Right at this moment, he was fed and rested, physically secure in the middle of his companions and looking forward to his first visit to a Kuo-toa settlement. Indeed, he was feeling in much better shape than when they had all been imprisoned in the drow outpost.

As he clambered through a rough patch of granite, using his hands to assist his balance, he thought about one of the spells he knew how to cast. He knew how to tap in to the Weave and shape it into a missile, and, if he so chose, he could generally form two missiles at the same time, though sometimes he was too fatigued. The revelation he had had that morning was that if he didn't focus on the energy type so much, it should be possible to create three missiles! Possibly more would be possible, though he suspected that might be beyond his current capabilities.

At a small sandstone cavern, the path forked, one way leading up to the right via a set of crudely worked steps, the other looping back almost the way they had came. With the light of his spell, Kamael saw Solace resting on a boulder. Wordlessly, Shushaar gestured toward the steps and Solace swiftly ascended into the inky black passage. As she did so, Kamael pulled out the map and added the junction, quietly confirming the compass direction with Shushaar. Junctions were infrequent enough that he had managed to fit the map onto the available parchment, but he would need more at Sloobludop. While he did so, Brinn and Kago quickly scoured the cavern for edible moss and insects.

For the rest of the day, Kamael practiced the individual pieces of his new spell, modifying and simplifying where he could. He decided, for the moment, to use fire, and by fixing that as part of the initial formation, it was no longer necessary to focus the energy through his diamond. The others were completely unaware how hard he was working, had not the slightest notion that it was possible to do what he was doing, though he knew Raza was observant enough to realise he was distracted. He was confident though, that when the time for battle came, he would be able to put all those much practiced pieces together to a new and devastating effect!

Jimjar paled as Brinn suggested the barter of a life debt. The deep gnome tried to shake his head no, but stopped. He paused. Then croaked in Undercommon--this time understood clearly by both Brinn and Solace--"Raza will strike first. A deal is struck." Jimjar nodded once and spit to his left, a sign the wager was agreed to. His eyes shifted to Raza nervously, as if reconsidering.

The recently completed long rest marked the start of the sixth eight-hour march the group undertook. Solace took point, and set a slow pace. There was enough rocktopus meat to not have to forage for the day, and Kago had once again called upon Gruumsh to create water. The rocktopus wouldn't keep beyond today, however. The group would need sustenance on the morrow, or risk becoming sick from eating spoiled meat. Solace ranged perhaps thirty or forty feet ahead of the group, pausing at intervals to wait for the group to catch up. After marching perhaps seven hours, she'd gotten forty feet ahead of the group and was out of their temporary sight around a bend when she spied the shadowy form of a creature perched on a rock ledge overlooking the passageway. The ledge on which the creature stood was fifteen feet up in the air, fifty feet distant. Solace paused and ducked to the side. The creature seemed not to notice her. She did not detect any further creatures lurking about.
