D&D 5E Out of the Abyss IC

The group gathered its things and set off down the western passageway. Half an hour into a stealthily slow-paced trek, they met up with Solace.

Ce'rek, who remained stationed lakeside, watched as the light from the torch flickered under the water.

Raza tilted her head back and narrowed her eyes; a posture the others had come to know was the old halfling woman studying intensely something or someone.

"No schools of angry fish-men on your tail? Well, then, perhaps I've overestimated them. You left the goblin on guard?" She nodded as if she thought it were a wise decision and one that she expected to have been made.

"Nothing so far, mother," says Solace when Raza speaks. "Come, let me guide you down the path.

By now, the spell on the torch will have long gone out, and Solace will have recast it on her shield, illuminating the narrow corridor.

Ce'rek heard the approach of soft footfalls and flattened himself against the sharp-edged rock wall. He was small enough that, when he really plied himself, he could neatly disappear into a fold in the rock and be nearly invisible to the eye. Here, doing so was an advantage, because he would still see a little. A band of kuo-toa entered the mouth of the passageway and stopped. Ce'rek made out a party of nine kuo-toa: six guards and a robed bent-backed older kuo-toa flanked by two additional beefy kuo-toa. The creatures appeared not to have detected Ce'rek's presence. They stood, talking amongst themselves quietly, and occasionally gesturing at the lake and at the passageway.

Ce'rek held motionless, trying to get a better feel for the group.

OOC: Can I tell if they're armed? Do they seem agitated?

OOC: Give me an Insight roll DC 10, please, Wrex.

The six guards each had a spear. Two of the six also had a net at their hip. The two larger kuo-toa were utterly unarmed. The elder kuo-toa carried a trident that looked more ceremonial than useful, but the points of which nevertheless appeared sharp.

Ce'rek studied the school of kuo-toa. Something clicked as he watched.

OOC: Awesome roll, Wrex! Two of the six kuo-toa guards are younger and seem hot-headed, but the two larger unarmed kuo-toa are cool customers. While the two unarmed kuo-toa don't move much, they stay fairly well glued to the flank of the elder robed kuo-toa, and their eyes constantly rove. They're tasked with protecting the elder, Ce'rek thinks. The group seems more interested in figuring out who was just here and where they've gone than anything else. None of them has a weapon drawn, other than the elder who carries his trident in one hand like a staff.

For the awesomeness of the roll, take your pick of one of the three of the following choices and narrate it: 1) one of the two beefy protectors watches the other protector like a hawk, as if the other is untrustworthy; 2) two of the six guards share a close resemblance to the elder; or 3) the elder doesn't move quickly or with agility, but his sharp dark eyes drink in detail, and he is--unnaturally, perhaps--charismatic.

Ce'rek eyed the group. While its different to tell the fish men apart, a goblin didn't hold his place in the clan long if he wasn't watching his back. One of the big fish men kept eying the other. He was either going to make a move, or worried he was going to make a move. Treachery was familiar to all races.
