I think generally, director's cuts are for people who already like the movie and want more... lore, I guess. Lore often gets in the way of pacing, but it's interesting for us nerds.

Or when the director's cut becomes overlong, self indulgent pap?And I am cool with that. I understand the attraction to more information. But my issue is really more when the directors cut becomes the default and the artistry of the original theatrical release is lost (whether that is Star Wars or Amadeus, I think the effect is quite similar). Also it can introduce radical changes to the story, effectively making it a different film. The director's cut of Amadeus makes very big changes to the Constanze character
yes you're right players and DMs are too dumb to think on their own and need to be told explicitly what is and what isn't allowed.
Sometimes people just don't like something though and are voicing their criticism.
