Question for those who played the "Baldur's Gate" cRPGs (spoilers)

In Races of Faerun it says the offspring of gods/god servants are usually tieflings/assimar. It lists lines descended from Beshaba, Gargauth (more fiend than god) Mask, and Nergal (untheric god) It also mentions exceptions (umberlee and her minions tend to spawn water genasi, not tieflings)

So, yes, bhaalspawn could be tiefling type.

I never saw the bhaalspawn template in Dragon, but I did see a prestige class for bad guys that still follow the dead god.

Warlocks tie in well to the concept: fiendish power, usable for good.

Yeah well it wouldn't be the first time a book would be wrong. Not to mention some of those fiendish guys came well after mating. This is like half gods more than "tielflings."
