Giuseppe easily opens to small lock box. Inside there is at least 100 or more gold crowns and a number of silver shilling and copper pennies. There is also another ledger, this one appears to be fairly new but the cover has been scratched up as if a pen quill was used to dig or cut it.

Inside there is more rambling but also gruesome hand drawings of the internal workings of various species bodies and then others of various parts being stitched together to create some unwholesome chimera (like a halfling's head on a goliath's body, etc.). Others appear to have machine parts attached or as replacement limbs. Towards the back there is more rambling about "the voices" and their demands on him for the knowledge they are giving him. One of the last entries is that he needs to find a new location to work as the pounding on the door during the days have become distracting. There are several suggested locations notes but one, on Summer Street, is circled.

Eli glances over Moradi's head and see's several jars where one would store blood from the recently departed (for various 'normal' funeral reason) but they all appear empty. There are also a number of urns in the back that are also empty. No ashes of the departed inside.

GM: You have to look in the ovens if you want to see what's in there, but those who sense undead and/or evil are still detecting nothing of the sort back here

Giuseppe pushed the book away from him and whistled. "I think you guys ah-need to read this. This one, he was cuckoo!" the kobold exclaimed. With that said, he did drag the book back to get a better look at the attempted bio-mechanical chimeras. Giuseppe had always wanted a steam-powered fist.

When Grynm returned from his errand, Lane gave him a quick glance- then blinked, and took another long step away from him (for the duration, she will be avoiding him as much as possible, and not very subtle about it).

She followed the kobold into the office, and looked around a bit as he poked through stuff. She took a look at the first ledger, mostly peering around Victor's shoulder. "Tut tut," she muttered. "It seems our friend found 'imself a patron. 'ow many thousand years 'ave people been making this same mistake? I suppose the question becomes- did 'is interest arise because of 'is career, or did 'e take up this career because of 'is interests?"

When the kobold produced the second ledger, from the lockbox, Lane scurried over to peruse it while Victor was still occupied- reading over the kobold's shoulder was much easier. Perhaps it was Giuseppe's imagination, but it looked as if she gave him a sly smile over the rest of the box's contents- then she set to reading. "This is vile," she whispered after a page, though she didn't stop reading. "I'd say we need to burn this, but the Order will likely want it." When she finished, she pointed out the address near the end. "I think we need to get there, and quickly. If the bodies aren't 'ere, 'e probably brought them along for 'is 'research'- and they aren't likely to be in good shape." She attempted (gently) to wrest the book away from the kobold's grasp to show the others.

She paused, then whispered to the kobold. "Once we're done 'ere, and 'opefully that's soon, then make a bit of a mess. Make it look like a spot of burglary, rather than a clever search. This neighborhood, a little nudge is all it'll take..."

Then she stepped out of the office, into the larger room, with the second ledger (perhaps?) in hand. "I think we need to scarper, lads. Looks like our rabbit 'as run, and if you 'aven't found the bodies yet, I'd guess they went with 'im- and maybe under their own power..."

Moradin poked through the instruments in the cabinet and looked around the room for any clues as to where the mortician might have gone.

Giuseppe gave little resistance to Lane's appropriation of the book, just a slight amount of resistance and a light scrabbling of claws as the book was pulled from his hands. His head turned and neck craned in order to follow the book as he tried to continue reading. Once the book was beyond view, he frowned and hufffed a bit, but nodded at Lane's suggestion to make the break-in appear a bit more larcenous than investigatory.

The kobold grabbed the bank notes and most of the coins and deposited them into his backpack. Perhaps the victims might want their funds returned to them? Before turning to subterfuge, he inventoried the names and addresses of the angry customers on the back of one of the letters and folded it up, placing it into his coat pocket. Giuseppe then started scattering papers about the room. He walked to the wall and hopped, attempting to knock a few of the drab paintings off the wall.

OOC: Taking the bank notes and most of the coins. Leaving a few coins to scatter about the place.
Searching the filing cabinets for anything else of use - Perception: [roll0] (+5 for traps) - Oh wait, I may have just realized the only cabinet is the one that Moradin already checked in the other room. Feel free to ignore.

Giuseppe slipped the coins and bank notes into his pockets as Lane started looking over the ledger. He then when and checked the small file cabinet in the office also. It was unlocked and full of a bundles of papers that appeared to be past bills and payment notes from various family, etc. There were also detailed inventories of personal affects, identifying marks, etc.

Reading over the second ledger Lane does not find anything more then what Giuseppe had and is quite confident that the man is mad. But from his rambling she gets a couple of ideas on who or what might have been driving the poor mortician crazy... she needed additional information to confirm it but she had her suspicions. Whatever the man was doing was outside normal magic or religious experiments. She had never heard of such abominations before now and it was quite unsettling. What was he hoping to achieve, or perhaps a better question, what did the voices hope to achieve with these experiments? And of course the rumors of dark spirits and ghosts had been rampant on Summer Street for some years now. She had investigated the area herself over the years and while she had never been able to locate the focal point of these disturbances she had always had an uneasy feeling in the area. Something dark was there but well masked and subtle. The only rumors she had of this neighborhood was an odd tidbit she had picked up weeks ago about most of the local dogs all disappearing from the area.

Moradin rifled through the larger cabinet but it appeared to hold no secrets. The urns were all empty and there smaller boxes at the the bottom were full of a random collection of what appeared to be small personal effects (glasses, lockets, pocket watches, etc). He made a note to look for the locket in one box full of them, but found none that matched the description given.

Intrigued by the listing of personal effects and marks, Giuseppe thumbed through the papers in an attempt to see if there were any clues about the whereabouts of Ms. Byrne's mother. He tossed each irrelevant page behind him in the air, letting them fall haphazardly.

GM: You can make a literacy test to go through the papers to do a search for such information. Some spoilers depending on your roll...
[sblock=DC10]The notes all seem to end about 2 or 3 weeks ago[/sblock]
[sblock=DC15]The notes go back just over two years. Until a month or so ago they were precise and matriculated.[/sblock]
[sblock=DC20]Starting around six weeks ago the note are well organized, but they start getting worst and worst until they simply stop about four weeks ago. It appears that after that they were just dumped into the cabinet, haphazardly. There are no additional notes, bills, or anything in the cabinet from 15 days ago on. This appears to correspond to when the notes and bills started pilling up at the door.[/sblock]

"I don't think I've ever even 'eard of some of these ideas," Lane said after a few more moments examining the book. "Maybe some kind of twisted mix of science and magic- like that tale that went around a few years back, 'bout some mad science-man using electric power to animate a dead body." She closed the book again, and shook her head. "Any way, we ought to get to this place on Summer Street, and right quick. That neighborhood has had a bad name for years- they say it is haunted, though no one has ever found anything. Unless our friend 'as, that is... And they say all the dogs 'round abouts have all disappeared- if he is making these things, he will need to feed them."

Almost unconsciously, she moved back towards the door, as if anxious to be moving...

For the benefit of the rest of the party who hadn't had a chance to read the book, Giuseppe offered, "This man, he seems to have gone ah-crazy about a month ago. His book is filled with some interesting ideas, although maybe ah-little dark. Before a month ago, he seemed to be ah-doing fine. But since then, he's gotten more and more off kilter. Looks ah-like all the people looking for their loved ones annoyed him and he moved on to another safe house."

As the kobold spoke, he moved over to the barred door in the crematorium and pointed at it. "Maybe we should ah-check outside and make sure he didn't leave any bodies behind. That could draw all kind of nasty things here." He would lift the crossbar himself, but feared he didn't have the strength. If only he had an ergo at his disposal. Soon!
