D&D (2024) Ranger 2024 is a bigger joke than Ranger 2014:

looking up hunter's quarry and it's associated feats i am further convinced ranger should've been build more like warlock, if WotC wanted hunter's mark to be ranger's 'thing' they IMO ought to of made it a cantrip and the ranger gets a list of invocations that can be used to modify it further like eldritch blast(or take none of the HM associated boons to let them ignore it entirely), as it exists now it's functionally a pure damage bump with a ribbon addition about tracking some things, it's too shallow to be their 'thing' as is.
You got it backwards

WotC did not want Hunter's Mark to be ranger's 'thing'.

The D&D community wanted Hunter's Mark to be ranger's 'thing'

WotC did surveys over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

The highest thing in almost every survey in the Ranger section was probably:

HUNTER'S MARK

Barbarian.
"Rage" as a spell that takes your concentration slot, and the class has multiple features build around it.

What if I want a Barbarian who doesn't concentrate on Rage? Don't be a Barbarian.
Does barbarian has any spells?
does barbarian needs to concentrate on anything but the rage?

or paladin is OK as it somewhat competes with fullcasters.
maybe ranger is undertuned?
Paladin got nerfed, while Ranger got buffed. I'd say they're about equal now, or at least much closer than they were.

I agree with those saying you being upset about abilities you don't want to use is unwise and overly focused on finding a general buff for every ability. You're not looking at the forest, and getting stuck critiquing individual trees.

then honestly, they need to *re*design because the majority of games are not being played like that.
Says what data?

We've played like that a lot. We use adventures published by WOTC. They have all had things like wandering monster tables, and difficulty finding a secure place to rest. We generally go 2 combats, short rest, 2 combats, short rest, 2 combats, long rest. However, typically at least one attempted rest gets interrupted even if we use a spell, so it ends up being 7 combats per day usually. Combats tend to last around 4 rounds so about 28 rounds of combat a day. Sometimes a bit more, sometimes a bit less.

Yes. My Drow Acolyte Barbarian has 4 different concentrate spells.
false argument,
your made a willing choice to implement spells in your barbarian build, knowing well that is will not mix with rage.
no ranger has a choice to replace "free" HM with anything else.
Does the ranger need to concentrate on anything but hunter mark?
it would be nice.
Or are you suggesting we remove all concentration spells from the Ranger list?
with current build, we might as well do it.

players take rest when players decide to take rest, only thing that DMs can do is to ambush them while they are sleeping.

it's fun a few times but gets old very fast.
It doesn't. You enter a deadly environment, and it will be deadly. What gets old isn't that poorly timed and placed rests get ambushed, but players continuing to try and do that without learning the lesson. The game was designed to have more than a 5 minute adventuring day (and you just described I think a 3 minute adventuring day with a couple hours rest). It's pretty unrealistic that you'd adventure for 1 hour and 2 minutes and then what...take a 22 hour rest?
