Haruka's eyes widen as Ironheart storms forward. She attempts to back away, but she isn't even able to come to standing before Ironheart swings his axe at her, and all she can do is wince away from the blow.

As Ironheart talks, Haruka regains her composure, her eyes narrowing to slits. She opens her mouth to respond, but no sound comes out. She puts a hand on her throat and attempts to speak again, but to no success. Frowning, she quickly reaches into her pack and pulls out a piece of paper. Plucking a charred twig from the ground, Haruka begins to write. She hands the finished note over to Ironheart, standing as she does so.

Even though Haruka was clearly rushed, her handwriting is still very neat.

[sblock=note]You said you would ensure I would harm your precious forest no more than necessary. This was necessary. If it had not burned, I would have.

What good were these plants doing anyway? This grass did not stop the Lady. These reeds did not stop the Lady. Even you were unwilling to stop the Lady. I stopped her, and this was the price.

If you can't read, please hand this over to someone who can.[/sblock]

Haruka begins to brush herself clean of ash and dried mud as she watches for Ironheart's reaction.

It's noisy, and my tree is getting cold. Derien's eyes open to slits, searching for the source of the commotion, but it's only Haruka and Ironheart. Probably no problem then. Shifting his back against the cooling bark, he tries to settle back to sleep.[sblock=ooc]

Ironheart frowns uncomprehendingly at the paper and tosses it into the swamp, where it quickly soaks through and becomes illegible. It seems it's not just unable to read, it's unfamiliar with the concept of writing. "I asked you a question," it hisses, Its face twisting into a glower as it raises the axe again.

Suddenly Rhole's voice breaks in. “Actually, tree dude, that’s the axe we plundered from Sir Goatface.” The fire in Ironheart's eyes dies, replaced by confusion as he stares at the axe confusion.

"It... is? Yes, it is. My axe is - where is my axe?" He slowly turns in a full circle, looking lost.

Haruka quickly but calmly backs away from the dazed Ironheart. She writes out a second note, handing this one to Rhole.

[sblock=note]If the tree tries to attack me again, please tell it that I will be happy to explain myself if when my voice returns.[/sblock]

She shoots Ironheart a wary glance before looking back to Rhole and mouthing "thank you". She then gives a small shrug and looks around as if to ask "what now?'

[sblock=Crisis averted!]For now, at least. Haruka will spend two surges to get to 28/30 hp and 7/10 surges.

I'm also curious as to whether jumping to 3 would be acceptable. I think with the skill challenge and soon-to-be-incoming DM credits I can make it.[/sblock]

“You probably left it on the way, somewhere suited for us to take shelter, lay low, and kick back. Why don’t we go search for that place?”

She shoots Ironheart a wary glance before looking back to Rhole and mouthing "thank you".
Rhole pockets Haruka’s note to him, and responds with a thumbs up when Ironheart isn’t looking.

“So this trinket I uncovered seems to be pretty good at channeling magic… though not my kind of mad mojo, sadly. The hag didn’t turn out to be all that broke, either...”

That would be a rod for Haruka and 20 pp split among the rest of us.

Haruka will spend two surges to get to 28/30 hp and 7/10 surges.
Remember to take advantage of either Derien’s Healing Words or Rhole’s Song of Rest (+5 hp/surge).[/sblock]

Haruka inspects the rod greedily as she gently takes it from Rhole's hands.

Man, I was bad at addition. I'm actually at 29/30, and I'm too lazy to ask for, or accept the benefits of, a Healing Word for the sake of 1 hp.

I too am ready to carry on, although I'm currently having trouble expressing that in-character.[/sblock]

[sblock=Pre-Emptive Skill Challenging]I'm not going to be able to check this thread for a few days, so here's a Perception roll for the upcoming skill challenge. 17, and that's with Divine Fortune. Frown. Well, a success is a success, I guess.

Feel free to roll more of these for me if they're needed. You can't roll any worse than I do.[/sblock]

Skill Challenge Time

The group is stuck in the Feywild and are battered and exhausted by the harrowing trip they've taken and the battles they've fought. A warm bed might be first in a long list of comforts to be enjoyed, but for now any safe spot in this hostile place would be welcome. If only they could find it...

Derien awakes from his rest at the tree and begins looking around for an out of the way location. His keen eyes notice a less traveled path away from the hag's home.

By the time he reaches the end of the bridge, Ironheart has shouldered his magic axe and is stroking it lightly with a small vine. He marches right past the other axe embedded in the bank - he seems to have forgotten all about it.

After a short time of following Derien along the path, he lifts his eyes from their abstracted stare at the ground and they light with a glimmer of recognition. "I know this trail," he says. "It leads to a hollow hill. Very dangerous to your kind. We should turn off - there is a grove nearby that burned in the war. Few people go there now, and it is easy to defend."

He turns off, and thrashes through the bush for a half hour, looking for landmarks. Finally he admits, "Perhaps... I was wrong. This is not the trail I thought it was."
