Sex and "adult themes" in game

While it's been rare that I've been in a game where at least some of the characters did not pursue some form of romantic involvement, either permanent or temporary, I've never had anyone want to go beyond description of 'The camera pans to blowing curtains' when it came to The Act itself.

In my games/stories, certain characters are in or may develop romantic relationships. The sex part is acknowledged to exist, but is not delved into in any real detail, only hinted at. At apropriate times, there can be kissing scenes, but anything sexual is 'behind the scenes' as it were. Basically, I write 'around' the sex. I describe what happens before and/or after, but not during.

So far all of this has been with NPCs, so I haven't worked around it with PCs. But I'm not going soft on them on the consequences. If a PC seduces the queen and she gets preggers, he's in for a world of hurt. If he frequents the brothels, he's in for a world of itchies. :p

I keep things solidly off camera, when they arise. "He/she's willing. Are you?" is as much detail as the physical acts will ever recieve. Character/Character ROMANCE however occaisonally gets screen time: just not the results thereof.

It's been more of an issue in this campaign in the last, to the point that one of the characters/players made a good argument that a ring of regeneration would be an effective contraceptive for a woman, arguing that it would "regenerate" the uterine wall, preventing a fertilized ovum from implanting.

Hey die_kluge,

Wow, thanks for starting a thread off one of my posts. I've never had that happen before!

Yeah, echoing what others have said, you can't remove sex from D&D anymore than you can from real life. Its there, and sometimes right in your face. However, unlike in our society (Western, anyway), fantasy environments don't have TV/Movies/Magazines pushing the stuff on you at every turn in an attempt to get you to hand over your money. I would imagine that things would be a bit more discreet and its better to roleplay it that way.

I just get bummed when people want to go into extreme detail about their sexy roleplaying affairs as it often makes others feel bummed/uncomfortable and it wastes playing time for the non-copulating characters. I'm not sure if that makes me prudish, but at least I can look myself in the mirror each morning and feel not so . . . dirty. :o

The ideas about a ton of b!@$#!@ children out there is very interesting and a great plot hook that I may have to use sometime soon.

the PC risks life and limb every day adventuring.

when he gets out of the dungeon. or danger.

what do you want him/her to do?

for me. in real life. if i can't spend my hard fought dollars on what is important. i am gonna be upset.

same holds true for my PC. his gps are gonna go to those things he values.

ale and whores.
