The Hobbit: Theatrical Release or TV Mini-Series?

(If this has been addressed elsewhere I apologize in advance)

I know its early to speculate about such stuff but if The Hobbit was produced how would you want it presented? Rumors about the involvement of PJ has gone back and forth, and Ian McEllan has said he'd like to revisit the character of Gandalf and that perhaps the miniseries format would be good. What do you think?

I think a miniseries would be good ala Gormenghast that the BBC did a couple years back. trying to shoehorn all the stuff of the Hobbit into a single movie seems wrong Although the production values might be less, with a good cast it might be cool.

I'd say make a theatrical movie of the Hobbit, directed by PJ, Ian as Gandalf again, the other Ian as Bilbo again, same person as Elrond, Gollum, and whoever else is left. Then have all new people as the dwarves, etc.

... Yeah that would be cool to see Smaug.

I want it

I'm still in awe that these movies have finally been made and are so excellent to boot. If we get "The Hobbit" as well I may just cry out of sheer joy. :D

Think of the cameos a theatrical version of the hobbit could have. For example when the dwarves are captured by the elves of Mirkwood and brought before Thranduil we could see Legolas standing beside his fathers throne.

I have to vote for a full theatrical version. I want to see the glory of Smaug on the bigscreen!!!!!!! Plus the battle of five armies deserves the big screen.

The big question is:

If the hobbit does get made will they remember to make Glamdring glow in the presence of orcs this time? :D

Don't think they will, just to keep it the same with LoTR.

if i had a vote, it would be: mini-series. much more from the book could be filmed for a mini-series than a three hour movie (although the cost would probably be so high, a network would have to back it or agree to air it before filming began...)

I vote for a 6 hour film. The benefits from both mediums combined!

They could even make the Hobbit in 2 parts and show both at once. You go see one, you come back next week for part 2!

I vote for a 3-4 hour movie. The small screen just wouldn't do it justice.

Hobbit isn't really that long, and you don't need much of a prologue -- you can jump right into the action.

Reprise the appropriate actors from LotR. Legolas can make a cameo.

Have PJ direct; film in New Zealand.

John Rhys-Davies can play Beorn.

HOB-BIT! HOB-BIT! HOB-BIT!

I would definetly prefer PJ to direct it into a 3 - 3½ hour cinema spectacular. Otherwise it will feel strange that it's supposed to fit in with LoTR, but doesn't.

Sort of like how the new Star Wars movies don't fit in with the old ones at ALL.

And after that... Silmarillion :)
