Well, I finally get it. I now understand exactly why people want their RPGs to have set rules and it drives them utterly mad when there are no rules, not enough rules, or the referee takes it upon themselves to alter the rules at their sole discretion. Because without knowing the rules, you can't follow them. If you're running a game and refuse to tell me the rules, you can't expect me to follow them. But...somehow...my character still dies and I'm out of the game if I do something against the rules...you know...those rules you refuse to tell me. Yeah, that's "fair".

That's at least a good part of it, yes. It's fine if a given table works differently, of course--the thing about preferences is they're not--and they shouldn't be expected to be--universal.

I've always felt at least a big part of was "Does this decision I'm making make any sense? I dunno, let me read the GM's mind." (And anyone who brings up "common sense" will get a sufficient eyeroll they'll probably be able to hear it from wherever they are).
