What people seem to forget is that in most stories before utopia happens there's some sort of terrible event like in the case of star trek there was World War 3.

That's one utopia trope. Another is that utopia is a hidden, secret place, because if everyone finds it they will destroy it.

there's also the fact that Utopia means, literally, "no place," since it was formed from the Greek ou, meaning "no, not," and topos, "place."

But I guess that would be too pessimistic of a view.

Reminds me of the science fiction English course that I took in college. One of the books we were made to read and discuss was called "Ecotopia." After the reading was complete and the discussion started, we were asked what we thought of it. More precisely, because I was the only one to routinely speak up on such things, I was asked. My response: "I thought it was [insert synonym for excrement here]." As with so much Utopian fiction it presumes the existence of perfect people, to populate its perfect society. The instructor was somewhat less than pleased. My fellow students, on the other hand, were.
