The Old School: AD&D 1e

Austin adds his strength to the pulling of the rope to move a bit faster. He does not look the least bit reassured by his cousin's words."Just because she is paranoid, that does not mean it can't happen."

Austin, Amirad, and Zhantain share very cramped quarters, bound by the confines of the iron cage as they rise up the shaft. The cage sways, and the chains groan against the pulleys and bang against the outside of the cage, but the entire structure remains intact.

The three find a platform leading out from the shaft about 20' up. This area is also braced like the mine below, and the telltale wagon track makes a loop in front of the shaft. There is ample space to disembark here, and the platform and track turn off to the left soon after the platform.

It also looks like the cage can rise even further up the shaft.

Lidia decides not to respond to Amirad comment but knows that caves are inherently unsafe and are always collapsing. She waits until the cage is back ground and climbs in. Once Stubbs is also aboard she starts to pull on the rope which raises the cage.

The platform is sturdy and braced. Here, Sarge and Lidia note that the earth removed here is a bit less solidly packed, as it would be for being higher up. Lidia, in her searches for cave-ins, notes the presence of earthworms along the ceiling.

The platform and track extend around the corner to the left, heading south.
