The poster who cried troll (merged with "why troll?")

Bront

The man with the probe
The poster who cried troll.

I've noticed on this board that there seems to be an abundance of people who are quick to scream "Troll!" at someone because they make a controvertial post (I won't name names, though I can think of 2 off the top of my head, one I called on it, but that's a different matter). Seems strange to me?

Why is that? Or, conversely, why/at what point do you scream "Troll!" at someone?

I wait until people have flamed me at least twice.

Really? I must be frequenting the wrong threads. I haven't seen an accusation of "TROLL!" for a while.

Mind you, it's been a long time since the Bugaboo days.

When somebody posts clearly "contrary" threads more than once, I start to suspect troll. If it's on the same subject I break out the flamethrowers. :)

And obviously if somebody posts a thread that's just plain insulting or hostile it's time for the acid hoses. Coming to EN World and saying "I like Rolemaster better than d20 because X. Please respond." is fine. Coming on EN World and saying "d20 is teh suck and so is anybody who likes it," is obviously trolling.

Other than that I try to reserve judgement since it's so easy to be misunderstood on a forum.

I'm impressed. Almost an hour and a half, and no one has made the obligatory, I-think-I'm-witty "You're a troll!" post in this thread.
Given the topic, I'm suprised too.

When I say I see it often, I'm talking like once a week (when I have the time to read anything beyond PbP stuff), and honestly, it is usually one of a select few. I find it funny, especialy when they ask it of people who have made over 500 posts since 2003 or some other such nonsense (Usually the sign of a member, not a troll).

Where do you see it? I haven't seen it in some time. Can't actually remember the last time.
