I hate to be pedantic*, but that makes them balls, not ball bearings.

Indeed, that's what we're discussing, metal balls. For the purposes of their intended use by an adventurer, they require no particular manufacturing finesse.

As I also enjoy a bit of pedantry, calling them ball bearings is an obvious mistake from a writing staff that comes from a time period that mostly only manufactures metal balls as ball bearings (and also that didn't want to write "sack of balls" in the equipment section).
 



Thank goodness we didn't expand this to cover pseudo-caltropian devices like tiny, stackable bricks. This thread could have gone on forever!

Clearly we need a magic item called "Balls of Mithril". Counts as difficult terrain for enemies AND makes you immune to fear.
