Tru Calling and D&D

Okay, it was a minor mention, but we all seem to like it when D&D makes it in prime time TV. The guy at the morge said he used to play with an old friend of his.

The episode is so far not that great...I've been finding that I'm enjoy them less and less.

Strangely, I'm liking Tru Calling More and More, rather than less.

Maybe it's desperation.

The funny thing is, they mentioned D&D not once, but THREE times! (First when Davis mentions he used to play D&D with Tom "Wiz" Forrester, second when he calls Tom and introduces himself as "Remember me, Gornor the Elf King?" and thirdly when Tru does a double-take when he remarks that Tom was "a great Dungeon Master - Did I just say that out loud?"

Pretty cool to watch a reference that wasn't immediately insulting or sour. Davis is still a geek (a "Morgue Geek" - scary!) but he's not a loser, so there's hope.

Anyone else interested by the fact that Jack's been flashing back at the same time as Tru? I'm pretty sure that (1) he has, and (2) he's screwing with her for some selfish reason. Maybe he's the Anti-Tru?

Okay, I like the show and I am all for metaplot but I am worried about the direction it is headed. In QL, Sam had the "evil leaper" and that's what this feels like. It does fit in the show, because they had an episode where Davis talked about balance in Tru's life. However, the comparison to QL isn't by accident. It feels TOO MUCH like QL and while I liked that show, I want something more and different from Tru Calling.

At the same time, I think each new episode is better and making the show as a whole better. For example, within the first two episodes, I figured out their SOP for the plot. I was hoping they would change it and they did but it took until episode seven or eight before they changed things up a bit. I think that's what is happening now. I figured out what Jack was doing in his first show and confirmed it in the second. However, they only revealed this last night, about his fourth episode. So, we will see.

I think my wife had it right that they need to pick a cast, figure out what they want to do and follow that plan. They seem to be "waffling" a bit and that won't help them at all.

I'm not sure "interested" is the right word. "Concerned" might be more correct. It definitely looks like he's an evil leaper, though. They could do something interesting with it, but I don't think I've got that level of faith in the crew, yet.

Having accidentally stumbled across the synopsis for next week, though, I'm a bit soothed. Since

it doesn't look like SOP will be Tru vs. Jack every episode. Who knows. Jack may even spur on the metaplot -- such as it is -- a bit.

Well, it seems to me as we all know Tru relkives days to save people. Jack is more comfortible with death and doesn't think that people who are going to die need to be saved. That's what it seems to me, anyway.

But he seems to actively obstruct Tru. He also seems to have an odd insight into the "truth" of a day -- i.e. what the real death scenario is -- whereas Tru has to do a lot of detective work.

I think he somehow found out Tru is the one saving people and then he just follows and watches her to figure out who he's helping.

I don't think comparing Jack to the evil leapers from QL is exactly the correct comparison. I don't think Jack is evil exactly. I think Jack is just another person like Tru, but he just has a different outlook on death. Unlike Tru he doesn't feel that death is wrong. I do think he and Tru will come into conflict, but I hope it doesn't boil down to some over the top fight between the two of them.

I think they will come in conflict and something will happen so Tru will not be able to save Jack. She might not like the guy, but she won't want him dead.

His obstruction is blatant, however - the whole "intercom buzzing" thing from last night's episode was about as obvious as one can get (though not to true, who couldn't see his face). But the thing that has viewers casting him as "evil" is his call to the suicidal girl's parents (the gambler about two episodes ago) which pushed her over the edge. He MEANT to do it, because he either needed or wanted her dead. Then he works actively to sabotage Harrison's love life - possibly just so Lynn could meet the Russell dude? Hmm.

Jason Priestley is doing a good job with his part, though - I wonder if he really means to play that character as CREEPY as he does?
