True 20 Fantasy

Hey Akrasia, did you ever get a group together there in Ireland? If so, which game are you starting off with?

Rydac (who generally lurks here at Enworld, but sometimes posts) is trying to put together a game now (I met him through Enworld). Since he knows more people, I'm letting him do the work. ;) He ran a campaign about 1.5 years ago, and some of those players are still around. Anyhow, he's planning on running on a 3e campaign. (Hey, since I'm not the DM, I'll let him worry about doing the prep work!) He already has a few people lined up, so in a month or so we should be going. Not soon enough for my tastes ...

I'm itching to play sooner (especially GM), and am considering going to the Trinity College gaming club to try to get a game going -- either WFRP 2e, True20, or C&C (whatever people wanted -- probably not C&C simply because the game has no presence here; True20 would be easier because of its similarity to 3e, but WFRP would probably be the easiest). I haven't done so yet, as I'm rather busy with the new job and trying to write articles (and I'm not sure how well a 35 year old would be received at a college gaming club -- I've had some good experiences in the past, but only because I knew a few grad students involved).

A bunch of people play games (card games, board games, and RPGs) at a pub nearby on Tuesday evenings. I've wandered around a few times, but I'm not sure how to join a game or get one started (and despite my occasional brashness on these boards, I am rather shy in person). If I get some more time (Tuesday evenings are bad for me now), I will try to figure out how that group works, and try to join.

I've been relying on my C&C PBP game over at RPGnet (see sig) for my 'RPG fix' for now, as well as an occasional 'chat-based' game over at Dragonsfoot. But hopefully Rydac will get his campaign running soon. :)

Wow -- that was a long-winded answer. Sorry! Back to True20 Fantasy ...

Good luck with your game, Akrasia! I am currently in the middle phase of a planned True20 game. It will be modern, special ops type stuff. I thought about starting with Spycraft 2.0, but the sheer vastness of the rules in that compendium is daunting for a one or two-off game. I'm not even sure whether it will be set in the 2000's or in WW II yet, so it's all kind of up in the air right now.

My only dig against the Planenr, which I bought last night, is that when I heard PDF forms I envisioned PDFs with Form Functionality enabled. Alas, it is print and scribble. Not sure how much I will use it, if at all, as I do pretty much EVERYTHING on my PC.

You'll be happy to know the editable forms version is finished and shipped off to Green Ronin. I would expect to see this posted and released within a week or so (depending on how swamped they are). Once it's publically available the update will be sent out free to those that already bought the PDF.

I haven't played but I am going to do a short adventure tonight to demonstrate it to my game group if anyone there is interested.

So far the only tinkering I've done is --

1. Added a fourth role, the Professional. Professionals have more skills than the expert, and the BAB of the adept. They can choose 1 good save and have 2 normal saves. Because the Professional is now the primary skill-based role, I dropped the starting skills of the expert by 2.

2. Added primary and secondary skills. All roles get 2 primary skills. Your number of secondary skills is determined by your role. Adepts and Warriors get 2 + Int secondary skills, Experts get 4 + Int secondary skills, and Professionals get 6 + Int secondary skills.

Primary skills begin at 4 ranks each, and secondary skills begin at 2 ranks each. If you want to have a broader range of skills, you can swap 1 of your primary skills for 2 secondary skills. Likewise, you can swap 2 secondary skills for a primary skill to be better at fewer things.

3. Instead of immediately gaining a new skill at level +3 ranks, when you pick up a new skill for any reason it is a secondary skill, starting at 2 ranks. Since, when you gain new skills, you are always allowed to add 2 new skills (i.e two new skills for picking up a level of expert, 2 new skills for taking the Skill Training feat) you can choose to take a single primary skill instead. A new primary skill starts at 4 ranks.

4. All skills increase at a rate of 1 rank per level.

Other than those rules, my "house rules" largely concern themsleves with converting and adding in other feats from the D&D and d20 Modern/Future SRDs. :)
