Antapkos watches the caravan move northward along the road, but nothing in particular catches his interest. Cormorante, Britta, and Kuwaia, quickly gather materials for a cookfire and cause the kindling to ingnite as they continue to build it in hopes of fresh game. While gathering the woods, Cormorante and Kuwaia each discover an emberstone among the rubble that naturally accumulates in depressions from rocky regions. Britta also collects some prickly pear fruit to make a tea and discovers an ingot of zinc.

While Siofrita is only able to take a small rodent, Sprthnt, possibly due to his enhanced hearing or his greater skill of obsevation, is able to fell a small goat indigenous to the area. Though small for a caprinae, the goat can provide enough meat for all six people with some left over for curing.

Though the goat is not very large, the necessary time will be taken to properly cure the hide and preserve the extra meet. The rodent will be consumed. Britta will attempt to determine if the emberstones or the zinc have any mystical proclivities. Antapkos will stay as a lookout and Cormorant will take a position near the ravine that leads to the plateau.

Fortunately, neither Cormorante nor Antapkos observe anything that could pose a danger during the time taken to prepare the sheep. Never having paid much attention to it during their time with a caravan, Antapkos realizes that there is a banner carrier with the caravan currently moving along the road. There was also one with each of the two caravans with whom the Bird Brothers had traveled. It is too distant to determine what was on the banner, but it seemed likely that all caravans carried such for identification. This one was an unfamiliar group and it was fairly small.

Sprthnt demonstrates fine skill in butchering the game animals and all meat plus the hide of the sheep is preserved. While the teeth and the tail of the rodent harbor a particular proclivity for waylines, no one in the party has a need for such simple items.

Britta proves able to easily discover the usefulness of the emberstones and the zinc. Both, of course have some commercial value, and the emberstones can augment the impetus for the physical function and intellectual cognizance of anyone in the party, and the zinc can enhance the talent to mystically render physical aid.

After the meat and hide have been prepared and two days have passed, the party becomes restless.

Hearing what Britta has to say about her discovered items, Antapkos and Kuwaia each keep one of the emberstones. Britta keeps the ingot of zinc. Once the hide is cured, Sprthnt rolls it up and ties it to the back of his belt to make it easy to carry and keep it out of the way. During the respite, the Six discuss the possibility of what may lie farther into the mountains and the possible origin of the Da’Roneh bandits. Having already decided to pursue the investigation, strategy is discussed with regard to meeting others of the kind, who might be more formidible.

They are not known to have a written form of their own language, but the people of Asylim call the dark, coffee colored Faethrins, Da’Roneh. The word is pronounced as DAH-row-NAY. The singular and plural terms are the same. This given name is now used by all peoples of the land. The Da’Roneh are on the shorter side of average and tend to reside more in the southern part of the continent. Due to some advancement in textiles and leatherwork, they are suspected to be somewhat agrarian, forming hidden, isolated communities from which hunting and raiding forays are launched. Nomadic groups, when encountered, are always warlike and aggressive, being known headhunters and are greatly feared because they are able to naturally manipulate waylines (perform magic). The Da’Roneh are known to revere carrion birds, especially the black vulture, which, though smaller, tends to bully other carrion birds.

Da’Roneh females outnumber males two to one because any male child born beyond the first is sacrificed in a religious ceremony, where it is left in the desert or savanna for vultures to devour. The war parties reference themselves to various birds that they honor. The youngest, called Crows, are relatively psychotic and will ambush anyone but their own kind by mystically charging a stone to launch with a sling; after which, they close to melee, where a bone club is wielded in each hand. The next age group, called Ravens, are slightly more formidable and no longer need to use a sling stone for their initial mystical assault. They also physically fight with light metal rods instead of bone clubs. These groups are all considered young by normal aging standards, but very few have ever encountered older groups or perhaps never survived the meeting.

Unbeknown to the Sojourn Six, they have discovered a path to one of those extremely rare Da’Roneh communities, but, also unknown, was that they were not the first to discover the path, not even the first from Asylim. Soon enough, disturbing information was to be forthcoming. Immediately however, upon following the path into a hidden valley with the Dragon’s Footprint, another group of Da’Roneh was ascending toward the descending party to apparently investigate the location of the previous party that was never going to return. The presence of the Six was not yet known, but the Da’Roneh could be heard conversing and were making no attempt at stealth. They could not yet be seen but their distance could be estimated at perhaps 100 strides.

Having traveled with one another more than long enough to have a fixed strategy, only a nod from Antapkos or Cormorant was needed for the others to begin moving. Cormorant and Britta slowed their walk and readied their weapons, continuing straight toward the sound of the others approaching. Each would obscure his presence, then Cormorant would also augment his strength. Antapkos and Siofrita moved off to their left, each camouflaging his skin and augmenting athleticism. Sprthnt and Kuwaia moved off to their right, each obscuring his presence and augmenting motility.

Despite their natural wariness and augmented hearing, this group of Crows is not paying enough attention to its present environment to notice that it is walking into an ambush. They do, of course, see Cormorante and Britta, who are making no attempt to conceal their presence. At the recognition of unknown people, the Da’Roneh immediately cease their conversations and change their demeanor to one more suitable for battle.

Only seeing two people and being restricted in the use of a sling do the coverage of trees, the Da’Roneh ignore their slings, and draw their clubs. They begin to fan out in the semblance of a formation, but charge toward Cormorante and Britta. Because their flanking positions are not yet known, Siofrita and Sprthnt may choose to launch an arrow, but short range for a bow is really too far for Antapkos to effectively throw a javelin. It is not possible to determine the exact number of Da’Roneh, but there is certainly more than six.

Having no qualms about ambushing known sociopaths, Siofrita and Sprthnt both release arrows at their nearest target, once they are as close as they are going to pass. Antapkos quietly moves forward, making sure that he does not interfere with a shot from his heartmate. Cormorante and Britta ready themselves to face the enemy when they are reached. Kuwaia simply waits to see how the Da’Roneh will respond to the ambush.

Ripples course of the skin of the Sojourn Six, as the visible image of each Da’Roneh Crow shakes for a few seconds. The violent young adults actually make crying sounds like crows as they charge toward Cormorante and Britta. There is no mistaking their intentions. Before melee ensues an arrow flying toward each side of the advancing line finds its target. Each arrow is accompanied by manipulated waylines, one chemical, the other thermal. Like Sprthnt, the Da’Roneh are more resistant to heat, but there is not really any other option for him. As the two struck crows fall to the ground, unable to continue, the remainder realize that they have been goaded into an ambush.

Seeing that the enemy is no longer at a disadvantage, Antapkos begins to weave bath and forth through the trees, intending to launch a javelin at point blank rather than attempting to engage an opponent in melee. He knows his advantage is in keeping his distance. If he must physically defend himself, he will attempt to reduce the athleticism of any opponent that he touches. “Run like mad through the trees. My blade will stick you as I please.”

Neither Siofrita nor Sprthnt have any intention changing their strategy. They will both attempt to avoid melee and continue to launch arrows, augmented with mystical assaults. Sprthnt is becoming dissatisfied with using a bow, but does not think that he is quite ready to drop it.

Being aggressive and having his strength mystically augmented, Cormorant leaps at his incoming enemy , using his left javelin to block the bone club and stabbing down, overhand with the javelin in his right. He wishes that he owned heavier weapons. He give a mystically enhanced guttural sound as he does in response to the heard bird calls. The sound is something like a lion roar, but he has never heard such to imitate one. Britta shoulders her shield and waits for her attacker to make his first move which will determine how she counters with her hammer.

Kuwaia will augment her motility as she sways from side to side moving to meet her enemy, working her blades to loosen her shoulders. At the critical moment she will hop to her left, swinging laterally with her right sword.
