Though the difference in time is imperceptible to the eye, the Da’Roneh Crows act faster than the Sojourn Six. Despite their speed, their aggressiveness, and greater experience than the previously encountered group of Crows, these fare no better. Perhaps some measure of Fortune remains with the six. Even when facing two opponents, none of the Six are touched; and in the span of about ten seconds, all of the Crows are incapacitated or dying, leaving 12 bodies to litter the ground.

Though the battle was decidedly one-sided, Antapkos, Cormorant, Britta, and Sprthnt are all second guessing their approach to combat. After a brief discussion, Cormorant trades one of his javelins to Britta for her hammer. He likes the weight of it better. Britta intends to practice with her shield and new javelin, sometime in the future, when away from enemy territory.

After a longer discussion that also involves Siofrita, Sprthnt trades his bow to Antapkos, taking his javelins and make-shift sword for himself. This better suits everyone, though there is a great desire for more quality in weapons.

Having very recently developed the talent to manipulate waylines, Kuwaia realizes that she is using her talent in the same manner as Cormorant, but that method is not best suiting her. She fights with speed and movement, not strength. She intends to spend some time speaking with Antapkos to see if she can learn to do what he does, instead. Sprthnt encourages her in this decision.

In the mean time, the fallen Da’Roneh are executed and searched. The Six will return to the lookout camp to discuss future plans.

GM: Since these are still novice characters and players are still learning the system, the points in the Aberrative skill for Kuwaia can be switched to the Hermetics skill.

The bodies are moved farther apart so as to not have them lying so near the semblance of a path then searched, with desired items being collected. Everyone helps with this. Each Da’Roneh was carrying a pouch containing dried fish, indicating there must be some viable water source within these mountains. Two of the twelve were also carrying a satchel of some kind of edible seeds. The seeds seem better for making into a porridge or flatbread rather then eaten raw. They are a little hard.

Each of the twelve had a fetish made from the feet of some kind of bird. Some of the feet look to be the same type. Six of them had been carrying a pretty stone. All six are of different colors. There are 8 females and 4 males among the fallen. Each of the females also had a skull fetish, most of which seem to be made from some kind bird. In the very short time of being in the mountain area, a great variety of birds have been noticed, far more numerous than rodents, which are also frequent.

With everyone in the party having about the same amount of talent in manipulating waylines, little time is required for Kuwaia to be able to determine what Antapkos is doing when he enhances himself, simply by touching him when he does. Very little more time is required for her to duplicate the process.

Britta and Sprthnt, being best suited to the task, take each of the collected trinkets, in turn, to see if they can determine if any harbor a proclivity for waylines. They know that the Da’Roneh would have been able to make use of such as well, or almost as well, as they. Cormorant and Kuwaia gather supplies and make a fire. Antapkos and Siofrita do some hunting. The party intends to wait a day before returning toward the suspected Da’Roneh encampment.

Of the nine skulls, two belong to some kind of larger songbird like a mourner, two belong to smaller running birds like a bandy, two belong to some kind of hawk, one belongs to some kind of calling bird like a parrot, one belongs to some kind of smaller ducker like a teal, and one belongs to some kind of smaller vulture. These offer the same proclivity as their equivalent feet, but cannot be used by Antapkos or Siofrita.

During their forays to find game, Antapkos and Siofrita collect some larger hyraxes and smaller running birds. They also are forced to shoot a larger variety of skunk, often referred to as a bird bandit. The game provides good meat, but nothing else from the animals is really needed, including from the fowler.

Fresh meat is always welcome but what is not immediately needed is slowly smoked and dried for travel, as acquiring game is never known to be a guarantee. From the gathered spoils, Antapkos selects the pair of turkey vulture feet and the pair of parrot feet. He trades his emberstone for the pair of teal feet and takes the pair of heron feet.

Cormorant takes the teal skull and the parrot skull and ties them to his belt. Sprthnt then takes a mourner skull and a hawk skull. Britta selects the Greenstone. Siofrita has no need for any of the new items. Kuwaia selects the Azurestone and trades her Emberstone for the Starstone. She also takes a pair of hawk feet and the remaining pair of parrot feet.

Business aside, the group then enjoys the food, and the amorous pairs enjoy the company of one another. Trouble is always near in The Untamed Wilds, so respite and pleasure must be taken when opportunity presented itself.

Early in the morning of the second day, with the low fog forming a mist that rises above the ground, about twice the height of a person, all of the Sojourn Six are surprised by the strategic advancement of a party of older and more experienced Da’Roneh. These Ravens, as they are called, did not come from the designated path, indicating that the lookout point must be accessible from the surrounding mountains, by skilled climbers.

Since the location of a target must be known to be chosen, even when mystically assaulting, the presence of the Da’Roneh is seen as soon as they make their first assault. Each of the party members is bombarded with a terrible ringing sound that only the individual can hear. Despite the reflexive talent of Cormorante and Sprthnt to quiet such a sound, each is still affected, albeit not nearly as badly as the others.

Cormorante and Sprthnt are able to shake off the effects of the pulsing drone rather quickly, but the others are significantly mentally impeded in making that next decision, as the Ravens brandish metal rods and charge.

OOC: From the farthest north point on the road shown on the map, the party is in the mountains to the west above the small cluster of trees. The existence of the lake is unknown. Five squares on flat land represents one day of travel or 10 hours walking.
 

Despite the clouded cognizance, the Six knew that they were in trouble. Anyone with the skill to initiate a surprise assault against then was formidable. Antapkos and Siofrita tried to clear their heads in order to fire and arrow. Antapkos concentrated on enhancing his athletic skill, while Siofrita concentrated on making her arrow corrosive, knowing that it would ruin the blade.

Because Britta is more overcome by the sonic assault than he, Cormorant does not charge forward but stays near his heartmate, readying her hammer in his right hand and a javelin in his left, intending to enhance his strength. Britta tries to clear her thoughts and holds up her small shield and readies the javelin she now wields, hoping to mystically shade her appearance.

Able to think more clearly than Kuwaia, who is normally his protectorate, Sprthnt stay near her and tries to launch a javelin as quickly as possible, hoping to assault his target with heat, as well. Kuwaia tries to ready her swords and clear her head. If she can, she will enhance her motility.

Da’Roneh:
The Da’Roneh close the distance and physically assault before any one of the party can act, even Cormorante and Sprthnt. Before either can fire their bow, Antapkos and Siofrita are both hit in the chest with a metal rod and knocked backward by an intense pulse of air. Both lose consciousness as they collide with the ground, never having been able to respond.

Cormorante and Britta are also both clubbed and thrown backward, but Cormorante maintains consciousness to act as a Raven closes on him. While lying on the ground he swings his hammer at the lead leg of the closing Da’Roneh. The weapon strikes and possibly breaks the left knee. The Raven goes down.

Despite being the strongest bender in the party, even Sprthnt is thrown backward, as well, when he and Kuwaia are clubbed. Kuwaia loses consciousness while Sprthnt futilely tries to mystically heat his assailant.

Surprisingly, the Da’Roneh do not finish off the party, though it is obvious that they could. A male Raven pulls the crippled female away from Cormorante so that he cannot touch her. The female facing Sprthnt waves her left hand at him, signalling him to stop, as she speaks in Ansylin. “You cannot affect one of us with heat, little Bender. Three Shimadows and three Ansylins, you are from Asylim. Why are you here? Has the agreement changed or is this a coincidence? If I decide that you lie, we will kill all of you, that Amiradtha will never know! I may decide to kill you anyway.”
