Probably line of sight or all that jazz:

Anyhow, you can just say that an enemy must have "sufficient life force" to be harnessed for the teleport. House-ruling that the target must be small size or above to teleport is probably not going to cause many problems.

I seriously hope that on the opposing page there's a section that discusses 'enemies' and 'allies' and who constitutes what for the purposes of special ability adjudication, with particular note paid to impersonators, hidden turncoats, people under mental domination, and the Pit Fiend's ability to make its allies explode...

I hope you're right, but when I played the eladrin ranger at D&D XP with multiple DMs (3-4), I was able to use fey step to teleport to non-line-of-sight areas. I thought it was questionable at the time, but no one stopped me.

I literally teleported through a stone wall and then ran around a passage to help surround a monster during one of the Delves.

Note to 4e Designers ..... fix now, during typesetting.

I want coherent fantasy action supported by balanced yet unobtrusive rules

Y'know that's a point. Everyone's been in a tizzy about how players might mark allies to get rid of an enemies mark. If you can do that - declare anyone an enemy you like - can you do the same with allies? That would make the Pit Fiend VERY VERY nasty. :D

Possibly when teamed with a mind controlling demon ally.

Demon one:"You're my friend, right? You're on my team!"
Hapless PC:"Sure, buddy!"
Pit Fiend:"You go boom now, kay?"

EDIT: Except, didn't it refer specifically to *summoned* allies? Probably to prevent just this kind of thing.

A 1st level character freely and unlimitedly teleporting through 10 ft. thick walls, locked gates, into the evil governor's bedroom at night, out of dungeon rooms filled with monsters, over 10 ft. holes, outside the townguard's prison cell, up, down, sideways.
Who wouldn't want that kind of 'mobility' ?

I think carrying a bag of rats, or worms or whatever you can kill, is a must for every smart warlock, alongside with his rope, caltrops, sunrods, etc.

You really think you can argue that the worm you just placed on the ground is your "enemy"?

If it were your "enemy" why didn't you try to kill it as soon as you found it...as opposed to putting it in your pocket and feeding it and keeping it alive all that time?

Naw...just doesn't work this time. "Enemy" is different language...
