I can understand not wanting to put out a lot of subclasses and rely on feats to differentiate characters within a class, but if that was the plan, then why did they go with subclasses as such an important character defining characters within a class and make feats optional? The options in the PHB feel partially complete and while the UA has helped, it's still missing some rather obvious/iconic ones.
I think subclasses are the way to go. They're not optional and don't seem to cause as many balance issues as a result of unforeseen combinations when compared to feats.
