A focus on mortality and impermanence.

A real possibility of character death. Variable-power encounters that the players need to assess, to determine if they should run, outwit or fight. Magic items that can be destroyed, and not purchased in towns, that have to be won through adventuring. A real need for henchmen and men-at-arms, increasing the tactical aspects of the game and setting the relative power of the PCs in focus. A reigning in of character powers, so that the focus is on player teamwork and ingenuity, rather than mechanical abilities.

Amen.

"Grand Master of Flowers" was the best.

My 3.5 DM uses those titles, and my Monk/Swordsage has just become Grand Master of Flowers-- he Quivering Palmed the old one (who rolled a 1 on his save).

What will his title be when he reaches 18th level?

"Supreme Master of Petals" (I'm serious)?

Titles or names for every level.

I remember reinstating these in 2E for all of the classes (including homebrew ones) that we used. I think the question goes a little further than one might think at first glance.

In 1E AD&D/D&D your character was your class (kind of like a profession today) so if you were a Fighter then you were acknowledged as a Fighter (like many people define others, at least to a degree, by what job they do in real life). My impression of 3.xE (although we've never played it this way) is that classes are just handy collections of abilities that come from a certain theme rather than being a characters profession.

Sorry if this comes across as a mini-rant . . .

Missile weapon firing rates. Nothing made a pack of goblins more hardcore than six of them shooting two arrows a round from cover. :p
Rapid Shot works for that. Just give 'em one level of Fighter, or two levels of Ranger*.

Cheers, -- N
