We don't have a problem doing it though we do so to the benefit and detriment of our PC's. When it's to the detriment of the PC's we call the person doing so "Gaines" because we used to game with a guy named "Gaines" who ALWAYS pointed out rules problems that went against the party (though rarely his character in particular).

We will also call you "Gaines" if you cut a particularly noxious fart, for similar reasons.

We do not really miss Gaines.

We pretty much group audit, whether for good or ill -- but one of my players has a tendency to make mistakes in his favor a lot, so he has to get corrected back down on a regular basis. ("No, you can do Rapid Shot or Multishot, but not both. No, you can't cast a spell in the same round you use a wand. No, the +1 for your magic arrow doesn't stack with the +1 for having a masterwork bow...")

He's not trying to get away with stuff, he's just a little "eager" if you see what I mean.

When I'm a player, I often end up pointing out "don't I have to roll against the monster's spell resistance" or that kind of thing, tho, so it hurts me just as often as it hurts anybody else. But I also remember things like "doesn't your character have fortification armor?"

As long as it doesn't involve a character death we will normally write off any errors as an oops.
If someone died I have rolled back time to do a do over and redo the combat. This has happened only once.

My group is pretty good about group audit as well.

Helps that four of the five current players are also full time DM's as well. :)

Me, I see it as helping people become better DM's by helping people to grasp the rules. No one at my table is a rules expert, but, we all have our own bits of knowledge. Taken together, we're pretty decent at calling up most rules. Or at least knowing where to find them. :)

I definitely expect that as a DM. And I do that as a player a lot and it's never been a problem, though I do get threatened once in a while :)
